Also I love how every BoSox fan in penciling in AGonz as their 1B at some point, has anyone noticed that the Padres are actually doing pretty good? And hes carried his team to an 8 game winning streak that just ended over the weekend? Why does everyone assume the Padres are going to trade this guy... he has an extreme production/dollar ratio and if the team keeps winning I bet they try to lock him up. Not like that organization has anyone else to spend money on.

He's been quoted as saying something along the lines of "I'm not giving them a hometown discount and you want earn what you're worth" or some shit. In other words unless the Padres are going to give the Mark Teixeira type salary that he's worth, he'll walk. He'd like to stay in his hometown but he wants money. Apparently the bosox are one of the few clubs that could offer enough quality prospects the padres would want in exchange for Gonz. The Braves are also in the conversation but salary issues may prevent them from signing him long term.

P.s Albert Pujol's wife is fucking hot. Saw her for the first time while my mom was watching Paula Dean rofl.

Not only that but they're gonna want the farm for him. How is the BoSox farm system? What exactly do they have worth trading?

He's signed for this and next year for only about 5mil per, which is crazy cheap for his production. If i were them i'd trade him to Atl for Glaus and Melky. Not gonna get a better deal than that!

The same reason people and the so-called experts said Ryan Howard wouldn't sign an extension in Philadelphia.

It's not like the NL West isn't up for grabs.

So Neyer already put up an article ripping the phillies saying this is a horrible contract that at the end the phillies are going to regret. It's amusing to watch all the howard bashers say he's maybe top 10 first basemen at best and doesn't make the phillies batters that hit behind him better. I'm sorry but right now as a pitcher, if I got men on base, I'm not going to let howard beat me. I'd give him the bonds treatment every time. Same with Pujols and a few others. Plus, if your the phillies, how do you not attmept to lock in one of your most recognizable stars who is also a homegrown talent?

Sox farm system is pretty deep. Lars Anderson is a kid that swings a mean bat. Casey Kelly is expected to be a top-of-the-rotation starter. Those are just a couple of the names being tossed around as being likely to be in the deal should one happen some day. The Sox also have players that are major league ready that can be moved, such as Buccholz.

Personally, I doubt the deal would get done, especially this year. While the Sox may have the players that it might take to get the deal done, the Padres still need to have a reason for fans to show up. Plus, they're playing well now. The longer that lasts, the harder it is to move him. Finally, Jed Hoyer being a new GM might not have the authority from ownership to pull a deal like that, especially to Boston since he recently left the Sox organization.

"It's nine years since your last title, which must have felt like an eternity. ... Some teams would love a spell like that, like the [Chicago] Cubs," joked Obama.

Wouldn't be surprised if Werth stays too. Most "experts" said Howard would be a FA too.
So far this year his UZR is much worse than the past couple of years for him and is actually below average for the league.

I'm sure it will even out. He's been making some really impressive plays this season, but his throwing to second is still a problem.

Wouldn't you like an extension for a fan favorite who's on a historic pace? I don't think any of the Phillies fans here are saying that he's perfect, or that he's Albert Pujols, or even that there isn't a realistic chance of him taking a sharp decline in a few years, but he's the kind of player who can defy the odds. Five years ago nobody would have thought he'd even be this far, so I'm hoping he continues to prove everyone wrong.

The question is, now that they locked up a "fan favorite" can they continue to provide the quality team in the future that is necessary to compete. Take this into account: his new contract extension does not take effect until after the original two years that were left on his old contract expire. Now, there is no DH in the NL, can the phils afford to hold onto an aging slugger who will, yes WILL, eventually slow down into his mid thirties and be less valuable defensively than he is currently. What do you? Do you bury him in LF and compromise your defense and have another Manny Ramirez? Do you keep him at first and deal with balls getting through the holes as both he and Utley lose range as they age? Neither of these guys are young.

He has 125m guaranteed. That is a lot of money that could be used to sign reliable pitchers, believe it or not something the phils need after Halladay, and replace aging players like Ibanez and Polanco, who also got a ridiculous contract. The Phillies are taking a risk, one that very well could be very beneficial, but it goes against all trends that GMs and Ownership are well aware. Aging players become less productive. The only player who justifies taking a gamble on is Pujols, because he's shown nothing but consistency, and is a player that hits for average and not just power. Lets face it Ryan Howard is a one trick horse, power pull hitter, HRs and RBIs. He's not a liability at first yet, but there's no guarantee he wont be. Unless he learns to hit the ball the other way more often, most experts find it hard to believe that he can continue to produce those valuable RBIs that the club needs to win as his power decreases.

I know all that, but I'd like to see them take that chance rather than lose him so he can continue to thrive somewhere else. Plus we have no choice but to embrace the upside of it now that it's done. We all know he'll decline, but we've got faith that Ryan Howard isn't Cecil Fielder since he's already shown consistency in offensive production, even with his decline in batting average, BABIP, and walks. He's gone 40 HR 130 RBI four years straight in spite of his deficiencies.

And personally, as a Phillies fan, I'm used to this franchise making bad decisions and losing. Ryan Howard has been one of the franchises best homegrown talents. I'd love to see what he can do in the long run, even as the franchise returns to mediocrity. One contract won't hamstring the team. Halladay and Howard will be pulling in huge contracts, but you'll also be losing people like Ibanez, Rollins, Moyer.
