More importantly at about the 30 minute mark in that video he explains in GREAT detail what a LOT of zerg players do including myself do and I think this whole aspect of drone production and balance are a big reason why zerg is behind a lot.

Not saying its 100% balanced but that the margins are a lot smaller if you fix the problems you have that he addresses in this video.

So, I just really started playing 1v1, been mostly 2v2 with a friend of mine. And during my placement matches and a few others...Im getting steamrolled even by bronze people. Jesus lord. I knew my buddy was helping a lot on 2v2s but not that much lol.

I applied day9's strats and holy shit have I gotten better. I just stomped a turtling protoss so easily where most of the time I would have been screwed. He is right though, you cant afford ultras till your on 3-4 bases.

How is the matchmaking in this game? Like say someone who's never played starcraft or 2, but has rts experience jumps right into online play and goes through the placement matches. Would I be placed against similarly skilled people from the start?

You will be placed against random people at first so it could be Idra himself on his new account or a 6 year old kid you don't know. If you lose then you play other people who have lost(and again doesn't mean they are better/worse either) until all matches are done. After those 5 matches it places you in a league based on your performance of how well those people were. Some people get places into diamond going 4-1 and some in gold going 5-0.

The best way to find out if your where you should be is maintaining around 1:1 win/loss ratio and when you start losing or winning more then that it will demote or bump you up.

If you don't want to get stuck in the lower leagues for a while then play the computer to practice, I did before I played leagues and it helped out a lot, that or 2v2 coop to get the hang of it.

And is there a command where you can look up a player's profile midgame? Like they did in WC3.

ZvZ lately is my best match up lol. I always roll my baneling early, split them in 2 group around the hatchery and catch the drone who're running away on the other side. If it's not working, it's usually enough to give me the edge on the muta war.

I find right now there's a lot of people reclimbing the ladders or they're tanking their scores for easy 1000 wins. I was in the silver bracket and I found that about 75% were very close like 45% win 55% loss but 25% I'll just get absolutely annihilated. Not sure if anyone has experienced this too but just for example I'm a low gold in 2v2 holding really steady.

The other day I had a guy who had been banned from platinum that I played against needless to say I didn't do well. I'm not sure if I'm the only one with this experience but hopefully these problems will be ironed out after achievement whoring stops.

Technically, you can't get placed straight into Diamond regardless of your opponents or record. You have to play some games from Plat league to get put into Diamond, though you may play AGAINST tons of Diamond players if you are winning against everyone they throw at you.

I know I played against diamonds for like 3/5 of my placement matches for one of my teams. The system is really unstable during placement matches and will throw you all over the place after a win or loss and take its best guess once the 5 are done. Usually it's pretty close (with the obvious exception being diamond players who cannot get into diamond through placement in anyway), but it does screw things up from time to time. I know I've gotten placed anywhere from platinum down to silver in the various teams and team randoms I've placed with, many of which I've worked up to diamond in a relatively short period.

I would say you shouldn't really expect it to be completely correct about where you belong until maybe 20-30 games in. After that, it should at least have the league and rough estimate of points correct, though you will need to use up your bonus pool and play enough games to get there. Note that this doesn't mean your actual league placement or point value will be spot on, just that the system thinks it knows where you will eventually end up. Best way to understand this is to look at the rank of all of your opponents, because battle.net is likely to place you against people it thinks you will have a 50% shot against. So you may still be a platinum player, if the system is placing you against 800 diamonds regularly, it certainly expects you to be able to reach that high given enough games.

As for the people just steamrolling you at the lower ranks, that doesn't necessarily mean people are trying to game the system for their 1000 wins. The above could also often be the explanation. You may end up playing people who are doing their placement matches and will end up in plat or diamond once all is said or done. Alternatively, you could be playing people who were misplaced for whatever reason (bad luck, disconnect, etc) and have to play enough games for the system to correctly replace them.

Yeah honestly placement isn't very good at all. I remember when I played mine I ended up in a 50 minute back and forth with a bronze player and got placed into gold. Obviously one of us did not belong in our respected leagues.

One or both, lol. It often sucks the most when it decides to put you up against ANOTHER player doing their placement. I understand why they had to do this for the launch of the game when no one was placed to start off with, but shouldn't they have phased that out? It's clear the system has no real idea where a guy in his 3rd placement truly belongs, so why should I have to play him in my 1st placement match? (This is an actual example from a 3v3 team I played with, lol). The result will be bad for one or both of us, guaranteed. He may be a diamond player, but losing to a guy in his first placement match may really slow him down. Similarly, I may be a mid diamond player, but if he was high diamond and not yet ranked as such, losing my first placement match would slow me down TREMENDOUSLY.
