Yeah, both Zerathul and Raynor swore to kill Kerrigan after she toyed with everyone and betrayed them a couple of time. Raynor's change of heart in SC2 was stupid

He was in love with the non-infested one and missed her, not that weird that he kept a picture of her. He didn't really have a change of heart in SC2 until he figured out he could save her and saw Zeratul's visions.

No one cares about spoilers for WoL anymore at this point right? It's been like half a year and this is the main thread lol.

I was pretty disappointed with the SC2 story overall compared to SC and BW tbh. It wasn't all their fault, they set themselves up for failure. I mean, how can you compete with Kerrigan and her zerg (ostensibly the "bad guys" of the entire series at that point short of whatever the fuck Duran was) killing 2 major characters and then raping the shit out of the remainder of the defenses for the three defending forces (including the "good guys") simultaneously?

I do hope they can tie the story together more meaningfully with the expansions, and I still think they will, but as a standalone product I just did not enjoy the WoL story. It felt like it was just too simple, characters were too clearly good or bad with so little depth. The few characters with any moral ambiguity (i.e. Dr Hanson, Tosh) were also the least important characters in the game, because they had to be throwaway characters to allow divergent resolutions to their stories without affecting the main plot.

And when you did finally advance the main plot, it felt so very unsatisfying with the majority of the juicy material being straight up ignored throughout the game, including the conclusion. The questions I had going into the game, I still had at the end. Where is Duran? What was Kerrigan's plan and why did she disappear for so long? What's up with the Xel'naga crap? WHERE THE FUCK IS DURAN?

The HoTS teaser gives me some hope that they at least haven't thrown away Kerrigan's depth, but we'll have to see if they follow through and make her as significant a villain as she was in BW. I don't like seeing her as some piece to a game being played way above her head, or a helpless victim to the zerg infestation looking to be saved. I like seeing her as the queen bitch of the universe, with literally unmatched ambitions and desires and an amazing ability to play people. I do hope by the end of the trilogy, she comes back into her right and proves to be far more important an enemy than that dark voice shit we saw in Zeratul's dream sequence thingy.

If they want to make her back into the villain she was, seems the best way will be to just have this all be a giant con. If Kerrigan allowed herself to be defeated just so she could defeat Dark Voice and eventually assimilate it and the Hybrids into the swarm, that would be even more impressive than her con in BW. I just don't see it happening though...

If it was the Zerg aspects that made her evil though, maybe reawakening them will make her evil again at the end of HotS.

Um, Duran kind of obvious. He was just a tool of the Xel'naga, or a Xel'naga himself. He isn't too important at the moment, just a convenient tool to move the story along. This might change in heart of the swarm, but the story thus far pretty makes it clear that this stuff was going to happen eventually any ways.

The xel'naga created both protoss and zerg. After spending 30min on wiki I learned that they created them so they could be reborn since they were not immortal (just long lived). I'm hoping in HotS they explain more of them since with out reading books you don't get much back story on them, and are left assuming they did all this just because they're pure evil which they aren't.

Zeratul found those hybrids back in broodwar. After that he sets out to figure out more, and Kerrigan does the same. She gives up hope however, after learning the truth (edit: I didn't want to spoil myself any more, but from what I read more of this is explained in books). This explains her disappearance, etc. This is why she said all the things she did on that mission. I'm in the middle of doing achievements for the story line, and you pretty much get the feeling that she's apathetic to the whole thing, saying "When it finally comes, I'll embrace it", etc.

I feel they did a decent job of answering some questions, opening up new ones, and leaving me thirsty for the continuation of the WoL story, not the BW story.

I don't know to me it almost seems like BW never happened. Like people said Raynor was out for revenge after Kerrigan killed Fenix. Not only that it seemed like Zeratul was way too surprised by discovering hybrids (if you played the secret mission in BW he already had come across one.) If I had to guess BW wasn't really canon but a lot of the ideas out of it were.

I liked the plot in overall, it's just that Raynor and the new characters didn't have the same impact this time around. It might have been an indirect result of the filler chapters that consist of 3/4 of the game, but nothing seemed particularly dramatic. They did setup multiples interesting branch, so I have hope for the sequels, but this one lacked something.


It's a shame though, I don't think they will be able to match the epicness of the Zeratul's mission. The survival one was amazing, but it's unlikely thing will ever get as bad now.
