hold control, then push a number 0-9. It'll save that group you had highlighted, and all you have to do is push the number to recall them.

ctrl replaces the group, shift adds to it.
If you double click one of your scv's (or marines) it will select all of that unit on the screen. So if you want to move all your marines out of the way just double click to select them all and move out of the way.
Your question was answered, but select your group of units and hit ctrl+# to bind it to a particular number.
Because splitting your force in more than two group is a terrible idea usually, you probably won't need more than ctrl+1, ctrl+2, and ctrl+3 (two for your main force and another for specialist unit). Because of that, it leave you a lot of room to bind building, and this will be incredibly handy later.
Binding building to ctrl+# let you use them without moving the camera back forth and back between the action and your base. If your command center/hatchery/nexus in on ctrl+4, all you have to do to build additional worker is to hit "4" button" followed by the unit key (s+d for zerg, E for protoss). It takes a while to get used, but once you do, you can create a bunch of unit without any efforts.
It's the same for everything. hit "5" to target all your barrack, then press "a" a bajillions times to creates a huge army of marines.
Thanks, you guys are awesome. I downloaded the game off of battlenet so I don't have any reference for dumb questions like these.
I always have my bases set to a number (usually 0), my detection units to 9 (or also 8 if really needed) and my armies to 1-3. 1 is usually my land force, 2 for air or banelings, and 3 is infestors. I recommend having the same control numbers do the same thing to you from game to game so you can quickly move your armies somewhere or quickly make units in the middle of doing something else.
Any one up for some games today?
I used to bind my base on 0 as well, but after watching pro, I realized they use the keys that are within reach of your fingesr all the time (4-5-6). That fraction of a second I save aint gonna change a thing at my level, but I decided to switch anyway.
On zerg, I try to bind every hatchery on one key (#4), and bind every expansion on subsequent key (#5, #6). #0 is saved for the upgrade building.
I personally use 1 for all my hatches.
2 temporary for my newest hatch, usually only do this for first one or two
3 is temporary for earlygame tech (metabolic boost mainly, overwritten with units later. Warp gate if I'm playing protoss)
4 is my first scouting overlord
5 is all my queens
2-3-4 are my army hotkeys, which vary depending on matchup/unit composition.
3/4 for lings/banelings, 3/4 for ling/roach, 2 army 3 infestor 4 muta, etc
Don't really use 6+ as they're too far away to reach with one hand. Although I might start putting all my tech on 6 or something.
0 is nydus worms :D
Most pros use 4 for hatch/nexus/etc, and 1-3 for units, but I've seen a few use the setup I use. Not many, though. I like it, but that's cause I'm used to it. >_>
As a toss, 5 is for all my nexus que up probes, using F2-F4 to move between my three newest bases (if it goes longer then a 4th base, the newest one takes F2 which is for my main). 1 is for my entire army, with 2-3 being for units within that army, whether it be stalkers for blinks, HTs for storms, etc. 4 is for the late game production buildings, so a robo if colossus, stargate for air.
I never go 6-0 just because it leaves too much room for error when hitting the key with out looking.
1 for primary army, 2 for secondary army, 3 for command centers (all hotkeyed to one so I can mass drop mules), 4 for secondary build structures (starports for medivacs usually), 5 for primary build structures (barracks usually)`
Any body else up for some sc2?
1 lings/ultras, 2 banes or infestors(if both banes and lings on one and manually move banes through army), 3 mutas, 4 hatcheries, 5 queens, F1 broodlords, F2 overlords for dropping with army, 0 overlords dropping banes in mineral lines is what I use.
You can bind unit to F1 and F2? Fuck...
You can bind locations to them, if you set it.
CRUNCY!!! Don't leave games early like that, we ended up coming back and winning.
as zerg:
1 entire ground army(minus infestor)
3 air
4 hatcheries
567 queens
when going for an attack i usually click 1, a move to base, and while all the units are moving ill position them accordingly and micro during the fight. i think this is the easiest way to do it really. its also makes it really easy to get a good spread, after you spread, just a move past their base. it looks tyte too
1: Nexus
2: Gateways
3: Robo
4: Stargate(if I have it, most times it's a space between the buildings and army)
5: Army
6-8: Random units in the army (Stalker groups, broken up by different units, etc)
Did not know about F1 and F2.. gonna have to try to add those in now..
I think F1 is defaulted to select idle worker, but F2-F5 can be set as saved screen positions.
Correct. F2-F5 I use to cycle between bases, f1 is for idle worker. Although, you can change that too I assume, which I probably should considering it'd be easier to have F1-F4 for bases, with F5 for workers.
