So.. is it normal for these kinds of placement matches for people to not give a fuck. I just played someone who immediately lifted off and flew into the corner and that's all he did. It took me a while to realize he what he did and get vikings out but it was fucking weird. He was also saying random stuff at the very start.

Generally in PvT it's best to get armor first. +1 armor coupled with guardian shield from sentries give zealots +4 armor relatively early. Against marines your zealots will take 2HP per marine shot instead of 5. That's HUGE early game.

Assuming you throw up a CC right after a Gateway finishes, and a Robo right after the CC finishes, you should have a TON of minerals in between all that. Enough to put 2 more gates before you put the Robo down.

Or given that this build order has no defense against aggression already, I think you should just put the expan down right after you put the CC down, it would only delay the Robo by a small amount.

GHOST NERF!!!! Thank god, finally. This patch might not change a whole lot, but dear god was it needed. An all-around general protoss buff, especially one that is focused for more long-term oriented play (upgrades) is always welcome.

OMG THIS IS EXACTLY WHATS HAPPENING

So I won my first match in placement outright, but then my next 3 opponents all /quit after like 2 minutes. (their scouts never even reached me) Then I got rushed down by a zerg player and now I'm sitting pretty in silver. Every match since then has ended with me getting rushed before I can get any sort of defense up.

    I am bad

I'm just going to focus on getting up 2 gates and throwing out Stalkers/Zealots to defend early stuff. Then I'll expand/get cute.

I started out in silver. Just takes a while to get into the RTS mindset. Watching Day9's newbie tuesdays helps a lot.

yeah one of the guys who whooped me in silver actually told me to watch day9. i think i'm going to get a pint of haagan daaz and curl up with day9 to drown out my sorrows.

i'm also contemplating switching to terran as boarding up your base seems a lot easier with them. i actually want to get better at micro but i can't do any of that when i lose in the first 5 minutes

I've tried switching race. It really comes down to the basics. If you're bad at a race it's most likely because you're bad at the basics and will have similar problems when switching to another race. Stick with one race until you get good then you can branch out. Not saying you can't play other races for fun but don't switch because you think it's the race that's the problem, because 90% of the time it's not.

I'd play more games (maybe ~20) before watching day9. If you have a better idea of how things work and encounter some of the pitfalls first-hand, you'd get a lot more out of watching day9. Honestly, it's not like the rankings matter much anyway, and if you just got placed, you'd simply stay at 0 points.

If you're a Protoss starting out, I would suggest:

    - gate
    - core
    - gatex2
    - 2 or 3 chronos on Nexus, the rest on warpgate

That should give you enough production to withstand most aggression, while still leaving enough money left over for you to experiment with tech (especially with imperfect macro). Replace the 3rd gate with a robo if you die to cloaked units often.

I remember a few day9 dailies that were really good for novices.
#208 - Coaching with djWheat. This is probably more geared towards gold/silver players trying to improve.
#252 - Hotkeys APM, and Mouse Movement. Again geared towards gold/platinum.

Protoss buffs and Terran nerfs... these are my favourite patches :D

Deejay, you're going to lose a lot until you really get the hang of the basics. Don't let it dissuade you from the game because you'll get over the slump and it'll really pick up in fun. I was in your shoes only two months ago and it got very frustrating, but you get over it. Watching Day9 is great advice.

Once you get the hang of things you should start working on one build order and trying to perfect it. That alone will win you lots of games.
My favourite one was the 2 gate robo expand (or 3 gate robo if it's 1 base zerg or PvP):
    9 - Pylon
    13 - Gateway
    14 - Assimilator
    16 - Pylon
    18 - Cyb. Core
    19 - Zealot
    23 - Zealot
    23 - Pylon
<Start warpgate research as soon as cyb. core finishes>
    26 - Robotics Facility
    27 - Sentry
30 - Observer (and scout their build)
    31 - Gateway
    31 - Immortal
From here either build up a small army of about 4 Sentrys, 3 Zealots, 3 Stalkers and 2 Immortals and then expand to your natural.
If it's PvP or 1 base zerg then just throw up another gateway instead of the expand, fight off the inital attack (should be easy with the Immortals) and then proxy pylon them and crush them while they're weak.

Edit: Deejay, what's your SC character name? I'm silver also so we may end up matching against each other one day~ I'm Lhyet.268

In PvT if I don't see a cheese I've switched to HuKs 20 food 1 gate FE which is very challenging (which I need to improve) but has great results so far. Touch wood I've not lost to a Terran yet while using it.

I tried following a build order once but I spent 5 seconds looking at my opponents base with my scouting worker and next thing I knew I was supply blocked floating 1000 minerals and had 6 idle workers. I may have exaggerated but it didn't go as planned

I used to have this problem.

Just queue up some circles or something with your worker, and go back to your base asap to make sure you're still doing what you're supposed to be doing. Double tap your worker to quickly check their base, then queue up some more and go back to your base, repeat.

What might help here is watch some pros stream, so you can see their camera and what exactly they're doing.
