If its a more standardized Void Ray timing, I'd agree, but if we're talking straight to Void Ray cheese, there are just too many insta-win counter timings that take advantage of how far away splash is for the protoss. 4-gate+blink, 2 hatch hydra/ling, or heavy marine+marauder/tank/medivac support are all nigh impossible to hold off if you went for such an early timing and got appropriately shut down. Even if they don't end the game, the advantage is so huge and can be complimented so easily with an expansion advantage, I'd call it a free win for a reasonably good player.
Of course, if the skill difference is so vastly tipped in favor of the rusher, then there certainly will be ways for him to get back on track with a more regular build, and you can be sure he will spot them. I've certainly lost games I should have won before, but even more often I've won games I feel I definitely should have lost. Many players just plain don't know when they have the advantage, or if they do, just don't know how to exploit that advantage.
Even if both side are equals, a straight void ray cheese doesn't prevent the rusher to scout with a probe. You can interupt your build sequence at any time if your opponent make any movement that make you think your void ray rush will fail. With the terrain advantage, you should be able to survive anything they protoss at you. I seriously can't think of any build that would automatically win, unless I'm taking a shot in the dark and decide to not scout (I only do it against people I know who play the same strats all the time) and get raped with a early rush.
If you see a fast expansion, you can harass him with 1 or 2 zealots (his economy will still be behind by the time you reach the void ray). If he is making roaches or zealots, you can add a forge and shut yourself at the first sign of movement. If he is going for stalkers, you should be able to change to immortal fast enough.
Unlike 6 zerglings rush, Void ray rush doesn't really hurt your economy since you can build probe non stop. You won't waste any money either, since everything you build is reusable. The only significant danger is to lose map control to mass units if you actually go through your rush and fail (lose your void ray). Otherwise, you're not really "behind". You still have 2 fine units that make good harassment, and a solid economy.
[edit]
Also, no player is omniscient. If you are being scouted, you can easily add another gateway, a forge, or w/e to make your opponent think you're doing something. You can also proxy your stargate anywhere in the map and trick your opponent with a robotic facility.
Bronze level player here.
I was wondering if people could provide me some tips on how to improve my gameplay. I just can't seem to shake winning a couple of matches and then losing like 2-3 matches. I am at a stall here.
Here is a recent replay of mine, where yes I did win the battle, but I am sure it will expose many of my short comings. Any insite would be most helpful. Thank you

this match was way longer than it had to be.
my first tip would be (since you had medivacs) make sure u scout all of the expos. you couldve stumped his early expo at 10oclock.
also, tanks. he blocked his choke with cannons. EASILY countered with tanks and an infantry to guard them.
lastly, constantly harrass minerals. even after your first marauder drop on his mineral stack, he still didnt build a defense. constantly harass so his economy foils. also, make sure to protect your mineral stack as well.
sometimes a good defense is a great offense

The Touhou fan inside me died happily XD
Got dropped as I was owning this guy's face. Literally one fucking Supply Depot, about to make my last right click and all of a sudden the game freezes and I'm like FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
Woulda been my victory if the guy left instead of making me have to clean up every last depot. : /
So the first phase of the Beta is done on the 31 of May. They are taking it down for a few weeks and then are re-opening it for some finishing touches before release. I gotta say that's pretty awesome, I might actually get my life back for a few weeks before the game comes out for good.
I feel like I get worse every time I play, and I've been playing sober the last few times.
Really an amazing game, tho just a beta this settles it I'll definitely be picking it up, plus the Galaxy Editor is tits from what I've seen from vids.
lolololol
absolutely inlove with this game, I especially like trying out the galaxy editor just to get a feel of it tho I can't really do much, and just messing around with the terrain I must say I'm quiet impressed from the improvements they have made, I have so many ideas running through my mind I cannot wait for launch day, I may not get to the campaign right away but I definitely will be messing around with the editor more and figuring out this very confusing(hopefully they alter it in the final release)but technically simplified trigger system.
