also, since you mentioned a Canadian fantasy author I really gotta big up Guy Gavriel Kay and his The Fionavar Tapestry trilogy (often sold in a single volume as well)

Oh god, my uncle went to University with Guy, I've met him. Read Fionavar when I was like eight or nine, broke my fucking heart with the Arthurian tie-in. It's hard reading it now since it's a lot more obvious he was like CHECK THIS OUT, I'M STUDYING JUNG. Cannot fucking STAND his later books. The Lions of Al-Rassan or whatever it was is okay, but nothing has the same gut-punch of Fionavar. All his more recent shit is utter crap.

good fantasy is all too rare but at least bad fantasy is still readable

when you combine bad science with a bad story that shit is unreadable, I'm going with sci-fi as being the redheaded stepchild (or urinal)

respected ya, but I'd but the Fionavar Tapestry and much of Clive Barker's work up against many many works including literature

Frank Herbert trickles off, Orson Scott Card is awesome, but if Vonnegut is thrown in with sci-fi then that's just not fair

I'll admit, Eddings is a record. He only has one story, but each time he tells it, it's a fun enough read, well, except the last set.
It's like Jim Butcher, artistic merit for the ages, probably not. But hey, life is for enjoying, not 100% srs bizns.
