    1st: isn't BG his LJ?

2nd: make sure you hide the fact that you're black until the last second, then whip off your mask and be like "HA HA, BITCH!"

The second happens all the time because I always speak on the phone before these things and people automatically assume white.

Unless the videos in question are obscene, of course not

Some employers might even take humor, if it is present, to be a positive thing.

Make a professional website, if you don't have one (and if you don't http://wordpress.com/ is a good place to get started, you don't need anything too complicated) and put links and embed videos from all your stuff there, along with some descriptions of what you've done and your resume. Keep it away from all your personal stuff (although it's fine to have a "personal" section in your website to show what kind of stuff you're personally interested in - just keep facebook/LJ stuff out of there). Once you have that, just link that in your resume, not forgetting to mention it includes a portfolio.

I'm not too familiar with applying to VG Companies but I can comment on how to properly distribute and setup a reel for presentation. I've worked on creating my own for Television Production purposes and a few key points I've learned along the way.

    1. Always mark both the CD Case AND the CD with your name and phone number. A lot of time employers may lose things, and if they like what they see on the CD but misplaced the case you're SOL.

    2. Always put your best work first. If you have a lot of competition many times employers will only see the first 30 seconds of whatever you submit before deciding whether or not they want you or will continue watching.

    3. Cover Letter -> Resume -> Reel, that's the order they will review your application. A Good Cover Letter makes them see your Resume, a good Resume makes them interested in your Reel, and a good Reel gets you the interview. Don't make things anymore complicated than that for the Employer.

I wouldn't link to your youtube channel, take it upon yourself to compile the best footage from there and make a nice Reel out of it. It's not the employers job to research you and see if you're qualified, it's your job to prove to him that you're qualified and you have something to offer the company.

I'm going to redownload my vid editing software and put my best stuff together for a single video. The application is online so I'll link that reel specifically. Luckily my channel has no personal stuff aside from video game playing and that's what the job would entail anyway. I greatly appreciate all the input, though I'm seriously lacking on the relevant experience in terms of my resume standing out, hopefully they make it to the reel at all.

I feel somewhat obligated to post something in this thread, but most of the advice I'd give was already said and I'm not feeling very clever.

Would it be self-serving of me to say 'good luck'?

3 minutes, maximum 5 on the single video, anything more and you'll most likely make the guy skim it. I still won't link to a youtube page though, it won't be surprising to find it blocked at work places, although this might be a little different considering it's a VG company. Provide an alternative (BG Tube maybe?) in the event Youtube is blocked.

Since this role is for making trailers, on your resume you should list what software/experience you have. The wider range of software you can use, the better in my opinion. Personally I would state the fact I enjoy playing games and then making trailers or demos; tutorials (as you have done with Smash). In the event that the company uses Macs, and you don't (and no this is not to start a PC VS MAC NO ITEMS FINAL D argument ) state that you are open/happy to learn new technologies/software, and [perhaps... don't want to sound too desperate] will experiment/self develop/self-teach or learn this software outside of work.

Any previous work experience in the VG sector would help.

If there's a sections for personal interests, state what you are doing now, project wise, of course, video (game) related. Perhaps a walk through of something, or more tutorials, on your current game of interest.

Since the application is online, I guess we should see what happens and then if you reel an interview repost here and we can continue for some interview techs

If you want show us the reel I'm sure we can give some feedback, but don't take it too literally as it should be ultimately what you feel as presentable professionally.

Final Cut sounds like a cool finishing move for a fighting game, incidentally, and I actually thought that was a Smash reference for a second.

Didn't seem worth a new topic entirely, but I figure I'll use an existing "black guy" topic to ask this question, as I mentioned to my girlfriend that I'd ask Ryko about it later, half-jokingly.

I saw a late 90's Impala (the last RWD V8 ones, before the crappy little FWD ones replaced them) on big silly rims, 22~24" I'd estimate, and it was painted with advertisements for something... but I can't quite decipher what.

The money and bling and shit weren't specific, the random black guys looked like they might be trying to make a name as memphis rappers or something... but I was baffled by the phrase in big bold type across the side of the car.

"Bar-B-Q or Mildew"... not sure if I missed something... but I don't get it... perhaps they clean grills? Mouth or Backyard Cooking... either work I guess?

Help me out, Ryko-Wan Kenobi, you're my only hope.
