From what I understand, political candidates themselves are fair game for the media, but largely out of some unspoken rule, politicians' families aren't thrown under the bus when the mud flinging starts.

HOWEVER, Palin is not a politician. She is a public figure with a correspondant's job on a major news network.

Hell, in the US we have tons of public figures who are regularly ridiculed who are ONLY famous because a parental unit was a person of importance.
