There is no reason besides partisan stupidity for ever miscontruing allowing tax cuts to expire to being the same as raising taxes. It is so unbelievably dishonest, that i am still not sure you're serious.

When you tell someone that a politician is raising taxes they understand one thing, but when you tell them that a politician is returning the tax rate to a previous rate, they understand and react to it in an entirely different way than if you had told them the former.

edit: People tend to be more outraged when they hear that taxes are being raised, and less outraged when they hear tax cuts are about to expire.

Basically, once you tell them the government will be taking more of their money, they're opposed.

In film/tv production tons of people work as "independent contractors" even if they are doing long-term gigs that could just as easily be salaried.

The producers like it because they can avoid unemployment insurance and payroll taxes withholding, and the contractors like it because...well...they get to be super fucking shady about their taxes.

Thousands and thousands of people out here become "incorporated" where their only business is, basically, selling their own labor to production companies. Then they write off ...everything... as business expenses (rent, car, bills, etc. etc.)

It's a pretty sweet gig, but I can see how the IRS wouldn't be too happy about it. Hmmm...

I'm not self-incorporated, so I don't benefit from my 1099 jobs nearly as much, although I've considered it a number of times.

It sounds like there are a ton of companies who are one-sidedly abusing the "independent contractor" label, where the contractor doesn't receive (or desire) any of the shady tax benefits of being self-employed, and the employer gets to eschew the legal protections they should be offering their workers. Stuff like that should be cracked down on, but it'll probably screw over people (like our plane-crasher) who -want- to remain self-employed.

They do have to pay comparable taxes, they just cheat on their taxes way more.

And it's pretty simple to set up a small business, employee population: 1.

Actually being self-employed you get to pay more than "other working class employees" on what you declare, because you don't have a company you work for that cuts in half for SS/medicare. It's likely the main reason people who are self-employed that cheat on their taxes do it in the first place.

Rep. Steve King (R-IA) told a crowd at CPAC on Saturday that he could "empathize" with the suicide bomber who last week attacked an IRS office in Austin, and encouraged his listeners to "implode" other IRS offices, according to a witness.

King's comments weren't recorded, but a staffer for Media Matters, who heard the comments, provided TPMmuckraker with an account.

The staffer, who requested anonymity because she's not a communications specialist, said that King, an extreme right-winger with a reputation for eyebrow-raising rhetoric, appeared as a surprise guest speaker on an immigration panel at the conservative conference. During his closing remarks, King veered into a complaint about high taxes, and said he could "empathize" with the man who flew a plane into an IRS building last week.

During the question and answer session, the Media Matters staffer asked King to clarify his comment, reminding him of his sworn duty to protect the American people from all sworn enemies, foreign and domestic. In response, said the staffer, King gave a long and convoluted answer about having been personally audited by the IRS, and ended
by saying he intended to hold a fundraiser to help people "implode" their local IRS office.

We've told you about other inappropriate responses to the bombing, which was carried out by Austin software developer Joe Stack, and in which one other person has so far died. But King's may take the cake.

(CNN) -- The widow of an Internal Revenue Service employee killed when a disgruntled taxpayer flew his plane into a seven-story building in Austin, Texas, last week is suing the pilot's wife, according to court documents.

Valerie Hunter, the wife of Vernon Hunter, is accusing Sheryl Stack, wife of Andrew Joseph "Joe" Stack III, of negligence, alleging she she knew or should have known that her husband was a threat to others and, thus, could have prevented the attack, according to the lawsuit filed Monday in Travis County District Court.

"Stack was threatened enough by Joseph Stack that she took her daughter and stayed at a hotel the night before the plane crash. [She] owed a duty to exercise reasonable care to avoid a foreseeable risk of injury to others including [Vernon Hunter]," the suit says.

The lawsuit also seeks to bar the release of Vernon Hunter's autopsy report, saying that, if made public, it would cause Hunter's family to suffer "severe and irreparable emotional distress."

Hunter was killed February 18 when, authorities say, Stack flew his Piper Cherokee PA-28 into a northwest Austin building that housed nearly 200 IRS employees.

Authorities say Stack set fire to his $230,000 home in Austin before embarking on his fatal flight.

Police have said Sheryl Stack spent the previous night in an Austin-area hotel but did not say why. Police said they had received no calls of domestic violence from the house. The only calls to police were made a couple of years ago and concerned barking dogs, officials said said.

A 3,000-word message on a Web site registered to Stack railed against the government, particularly the IRS.

"I saw it written once that the definition of insanity is repeating the same process over and over and expecting the outcome to suddenly be different," the online message said. "I am finally ready to stop this insanity. Well, Mr. Big Brother IRS man, let's try something different; take my pound of flesh and sleep well."

Sheryl Stack issued a statement after the attack expressing "sincere sympathy to the victims and their families."

This is ridiculous, but I guess I shouldn't be surprised since we can sue anyone for basically anything.
