Rosetta Stone Hack - help for a friend

long story, but a buddy of mine needs to learn vietnamese and he has obtained a hacked copy of the rosetta stone vietnamese language version.

now i'm no hackologist, but apparently they have some sort of proprietary file type (.cxt?), and that is giving him problems with creating a image file.

any thoughts / experience / gfm posts are welcome.

Hackologist. Ill look into it for you when I get home, I have 2 of them and they work fine, I dont recall having to do anything special for them to work. Do you know where/how he came across this?

But I do know there is a fairly easy to work with torrent on Demonoid, might save you the hassle just taking that approach.

email i just got from him. he torrented em, wasn't limewire. maybe i should just find him a better torrent?

actually, he's just trying to get it to run on his home computer, i was incorrect. the hacked program doesn't recognize the files for some reason.

I'd try a better torrent. Like I said I have 2 of them and they work absolutely wonderful, he probably got an incomplete or a fucked up torrent perhaps?

Either way he shouldn't have to go out of his way to make them work.

I remember trying to get rosetta stone to work ages ago.

It works like this:
Lets say you have Rosetta Stone version 5.00.
You need the language disc for that version.

I had this issue where I downloaded the base program and the language from two different torrents which happened to be two different versions and they wouldn't load.

However if you buy the software and you upgrade the main program the language pack updates because you entered some key or some shit I don't know exactly its way to expensive to think about buying.

I think the correct answer is to torrent some Pimsleur cds instead.


(Well, not to be a total jerk I'll expand on this a bit...

Rosetta is a very undirected learning method that concentrates on rote memorization of grammar and nouns, while the Pimsleur method is intended to enable you to actually speak the language first and learn the picky details later. Everyone I've talked to who has tried both prefers Pimsleur as the better learning tool when trying to pick up a new language for actual conversation, while Rosetta stone is generally compared unfavorably to very expensive flash cards)

If your friend downloaded it via torrent there is with no doubt an .nfo file or something similar that came with it. Those always tell you how to use the files.

I have it installed with the 3 levels of French I beleive and I remember having a few problems. I can't remember what I did to fix the problem. I know I had to get a previous version in order to install because newer versions were voiding the crack I had.

I think I also loaded the ISOs through Power ISO or something. I know I have burned copies of the images downstairs also, so it may have required me to burn them.

Another thing to consider -

Those languages are typically packed in ISOs. Make sure that your friend knows how to burn an ISO onto a disc or mount one with Daemon Tools or whatever. That shits like pirating 101.

It sounds to me like you're friend isn't mounting it. It's hard to identify the problem without knowing how much your friend knows about pirating and installing pirated programs. Calling it hacking makes me think you and probably your friend as well are pretty inexperienced. He needs to make sure whatever language he is trying to load is in .iso format, if he got it from a half decent torrent site it should already be in that format. Does your friend have winrar and understand that he needs to extract the .iso from the archive before?

The other possibility is that the torrent he downloaded is bad. I think the chance of this being the case is pretty high due to the fact that you are posting his issue here on BG, instead of him asking this question on the site he got it from. When I got Rosetta Stone there was a lot of information on the site on how to install it and get it running properly, if he doesn't have access to a forum to talk about the torrents on the website, and the comments section is very small or unhelpful this makes me think that he may have gotten it from a site that isn't super strict on quality of uploads.

I could be way off still, it's hard to diagnose a problem on a forum like this since peoples experience with torrenting is so varied. This shit seems real hard when you're somewhat new to it, but gets a lot easier once you are accustomed to how programs typically work. From my personal experience, I DL'd and installed Rosetta without any complications popping up, definitely one of the easier pirated installs.

yeah, like i said - i don't torrent or hack anything, not my deal - and he isn't a total computer genius afaik either, so call me inexperienced. i don't think he's just not extracting the files though, that's a little too elementary.

it sounds like he just torrented a bad copy or as someone said above doesn't have matching versions, so i'm going to point him to read this thread and have him delete whatever he's got downloaded, and try again. doesn't sound like there should be an issue once he gets a correct torrent file.
