[HLEP] The best router for PS3 gaming?

My D-Link router has been acting up lately (specifically, it doesn't seem to like my Playstation 3 anymore and I'm 100% sure it's not the console fault since it's done the same shit with 3 different models already, go figure) and seeing as it's almost 6 years old I was looking to replace it with something that will work, out of the box, with my PS3 as well (possibly through a wired connection).

Does anybody have any suggestion and/or first hand experience they feel like sharing?

I don't mind spending up to 100 Euro (135~ US $) if it's gonna be worth it. That being said, the cheaper, the better (also my third-world country'ish internet connection is anything but stellar when it comes to performances, it's just a crappy 7 Mbps/500k D/U DSL).

    Thanks in advance.

Ive used this 1 for about a year now and love it never had any problems with it(and yes i have a ps3 hooked up to it) its wired but from what i rember they also make a wireless 1 with the same spec's

    D-Link DGL-4100 10/100/1000Mbps GamerLounge Broadband Gigabit Gaming Router 1 x 10/100Mbps WAN Ports 4 x 10/100/1000Mbps LAN Ports

only 2 anoyences ive had with it one being the lights on it are bright blue and anoying as hell and the other is that when you first install it you need to unplug your modem hook everything up then make sure to plug the router and modem back in at the same time.

Thanks a bunch Calina, I'll check if that particular model is still on sale around here.

Isn't that a sort of custom-firmware for wireless routers? I'd rather go through cables honestly.

Anyone else? Even just the name/model of your router followed by a telegraphic "to my knowledge it works well with PS3" or "haven't had problems with it thus far" would suffice, I'm a noob when it comes to this kinda stuff and I just don't wanna end up buying an overpriced pos that might not be "compatible" with my PS3 D:

I've had this for about 2 years now. Use it with my 2 wireless laptops and my wired 360/ps3 and its awesome. Only problems i've ever had were:

    1) GF's gunnie pig ate therw the power cord.

    2) basicly router stoped doing anything. neither laptop picked up the signal and the ps3/360 deteced no signal (via wired). called and tech support told me to hold the reset button for 5 sec and it fixed everything.

also linksy has rly good tech support. just dont pay for the remote assistance thing. DIY

i am sorry to hijack the thread, but i am also in need of a new router. And, i think my question ties into the OP's.

I have been debating between a wired and a wireless router. What are the performance diferances between the two? We have an old laptop (should be replaced), A PC that cannot run even EVE Online, and a PS3. I am looking into buying a new PC once the system specs for FFXIV are released as money is a bit tight, and if i am going to spend the money on a PC... it might as well run the games i want to use it for. Given the increased performance of a newer PC, and the PS3, is there a noticable differance between wireless and wired routers?

performance wise, I find it hard to believe that a wireless router can out perform a wired. But, i cant say that i have read anything to convince me of that. So, i am asking around.

Wired is always the best option if it is possible. People don't use wireless connections for better performance, they use it for less wires/ease of portability or for long distances (computer in upstairs bedroom but router and modem are downstairs etc.)

If you are going to be using programs like PS3 Media Server to stream HD content over your network, then go with wired. It really only makes a difference over your own network, as broadband speeds aren't really up to the speeds that can be affected by wireless, and if they ever do, there will probably be a new standard (N just got officially approved). But the only other problem with wireless is signal strength and random dropouts, which can happen. So, wired is a fast and more stable connection.

The WRT54GL/GS/G line is by far the best for custom firmware, and down that road, more advanced routing, but if you just want an easy, fast wireless network there are lots of nice options to look into.

D-Link sells several very nice gaming routers that operate on the Wireless-N frequency. This is a newer frequency which is faster than Wireless-G, the frequency that most networks operate on right now.

I probably wouldn't by a router that isn't Linksys or D-Link, but that's just my opinion.

I've been using this router for about 2 years now: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-030-_-Product

Awesome router, running dd-wrt. I almost never have to touch it, when I used to need to restart my d-link one every week or so.

    Would highly recommend.

It benefits wired connections more than wireless, to be honest. I'm partial to buffalo routers myself, many of which come pre-installed with DD-WRT nowadays (which shows you how good the firmware is - even a big manufacturer factory installs it to their hardware) and most of those that don't can still be flashed with it.
