Problem with Vayne is that he's a sympathetic villian, and people in general don't like sympathetic villians.
Because once you identify with the villian...he stops being the villian, thus...12 had no villian.
I'd of rather of joined Vayne's plan than the real one.
XII's story was more of a clash of empires. Bigger fish trying to eat smaller one, Rebels vs. the Authority. Vayne's strong relations with Larsa hinted from the beginning that he is not a madman who is trying to destroy the world. He was ambitious enough to resort patricide, but wouldn't risk his younger brother.
XII was a very good break from what we were used to in JRPGs. Seriously, stuff gets old. We didn't need another villain that screms "pitiful mortals, pathetic humans" that's gifted by super powers without lifting a finger.
The only real gripes I have with XII are that nothing is really explained about how/why shattering the Sun Cryst stops the Occuria from interfering with mankind. I guess we're led to believe that they didn't create it because if they did you'd think they'd be able to create another.
Also, not enough information on the Occuria in general (Venat included, why did Venat betray the other Occuria?). I don't really so much care about where they came from... trying to explain God-like beings never turns out so well but we never even really see them again after Ashe speaks to them.
I mean, the scene was great... but I would have liked to see more.

boy, this thread went gay fast. Personally, 12 is the only FF game I didn't complete. Got bored with it halfway through.
I felt there was alot to like about FF12.
The whole "clash of empires" and "slow rise to power" was something newish for the series, which before had generalized by some ungodly inhuman freak who is insanely strong and hates all of humanity.
It was nice to be able to identify with the villain, a sympathetic main villain is something not done very often in this series.
That said I couldn't bring myself to finish 12 (Mainly cause I felt like I was playing 11). I found most of the characters uninteresting, I never thought a character could be more dislikable then Tidus (FFX) but Vaan showed me the error of that line of thought.
Balthier was pure win though.
I disagree that 6's story was a pile of crap, yes compared to modern storytelling standards it doesn't hold up so well, but compared to what was available at the time and what came after it still holds up well as an rpg classic in the veins of chrono trigger.
Just for the fact that they had the balls to have the bad guy "win" put's it ahead of it's peers.
I wish Kefka had been fleshed out but by far he is my favorite villain of the series, the OG of sadist's with a god complex even.
FF12 was painfully boring but I think the combat system is one of the best. It wasn't enough to keep me interested. W/ regards to FF8, I don't buy this guy's theory either. "Hey it turns out everything was a dream, nothing to see here." That's the most horrible cliche and fucking lazy story-telling. Last, the Ultimacia = Rinoa thing is more of the horribad writing.
I'd say he was manipulating Vayne and other for his personal ambitions...but the story never reveals why he betrays other Occuria.Venat included, why did Venat betray the other Occuria?
I believe they did create the Sun Cryst but they no longer live in the same plane of existence with ivalice and unable place another one. Even if they create, that wouldn't do any good.I have with XII are that nothing is really explained about how/why shattering the Sun Cryst stops the Occuria from interfering with mankind. I guess we're led to believe that they didn't create it because if they did you'd think they'd be able to create another.
Sun Cryst was their only ties of communication with ivalice.
I liked 1, t, 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11. I'm liking 6, and I'm planning to go through 2, 4, and 5 sometime soon. 10-2, and 12 are the only ones I've actually not liked. (10-2 had amazingly awesome game mechanics though.)
Remake FFT and for God's sake, PLEASE keep the same musical geniuses. Run Past Through the Plains is the greatest RPG song ever. Ever.
Can we talk about FF Tactics again? The thread started to get good. Best story by far. As if the main story didn't add enough depth to the title, all the extra stuff added an incredible amount back-story, and even further character development. There really isn't all that much that you can say they left out, and it had virtually 0 plot holes.
I, like probably many people, was introduced to the FF series through 7, but it was Tactics that got me hooked and wanting more.
When I saw the leaked cutscene from when you first encounter a judge I thought the game was gonna be about fighting badasses in heavy armor -fuck yeah
Then they show the sexy ass FFXII logo -fuck yeah can't wait
Then they make the judges generic minibosses..
This and IX were the only FF's I haven't completed yet (X-2 doesn't count) I kinda just lost interest halfway through Giruvegan. They switched directors midway through right? That explains alot, the focus was kinda all over the place, even for a FF game-
back on topic FFIV is the best FF followed by Tactics, fuck all of you
Nothing on the SNES is best.
Nostalgia blinds you.
Hey, the Red Wings theme still holds up VERY well to this day. There are still gems that withstand the rigors of time. Listen to the Super Mario World castle theme sometime for a refresher course.
I liked Tactics, but I think the storyline got kinda derivative and meh towards the end. I loved it until the final part or so where it shifted from a complex drama into a "good vs evil" type affair. The gameplay does kind of shift towards the end to finding an overpowered class and spamming the hell out of it (hey, they even give you Orlandeau to this end!) but it was fairly deep and quite challenging before that.
This has prolly been banged out in the thread already, as it is in most of them but...
I find it funny how like all the other final fantasy related topics this burns down to a "so and so ff# is the best, everything after sucked" or a "don't remake that one, fuck those guys! remake 'my fav. number'" or even "fuck that noise, remake xenogears instead!" discussion.
The theory is kinda interesting, I love these discoveries and am actually hoping XIII is riddled with them (interesting possibilities, not gaping plot holes).
I disagree.
I just recently convinced a friend to pick up Chrono Trigger for the DS, he is about halfway through enjoying it immensely. Nostalgia or not, it's a fine game that still hold's up despite it's age.
He was quite pissed when Magus sh*t talked about Chrono, you have to have an emotional investment for a reaction like that.
Comparing apples to oranges perhaps, a good game is a good game, no matter which generation it was made.
Regarding Tactics: I really loved that game on the ps1, though I can't say I cared for the story as a whole. I hear the translation was tightened up along with other improvements in the rereleases, I'll probably wind up borrowing my friends psp version sometime.
I do remember being pissed at how short it was, I was under the impression you needed all the stones to complete the game, and remembering only having like 1/2 when I got to the final boss.
Was really disappointed as I thought I had another 20 hours to go.
That and the ending (if I remember properly, was a long time ago) kind of made me go WTF?!?
<3
As for which one takes cake. At least for me I liked 9 the best. It might not have been the best one, but it was my personal favorite. The only one I really can't stand is 2.. The story is nice enough and the music is awesome. But that whole level up system pisses me off. The sphere grid does to an extent but it's still not as bad as the system in 2..
As for 12, I must say it was pretty good. It had a good enough villain, the music was nice enough, the areas were gorgeous. Once you got past Vaan and his painted abs it wasn't that bad. Not the best one imo but not the worst.
If I had to rank them I'd probably go 9>6>5>8>12>10>6>3>4>7>1>2. I'm not ranking 11 because of the onlineitude. But it'd be in the middle somewhere.
Also.. I should actually sit down and play tactics. I owned it once.. Got up to like three battles and then it went missing. :\ I shall play it after I refinish Ocarina of Time.
Tactics gameplay is old, won't be able to keep up with any current-generation engine.
So instead of wasting time and resources on a remake, they should make a solid sequel with an entirely new battle system/gameplay(with a better AI)....something like Valkyria Chronicles. It should...MUST have a multiplayer option as well.
And yeah, Sakimoto should be the composer.
