Sure some other jobs might be more "optimal" but that doesnt change the fact NIN works and is perfectly capable of tanking pretty much any mob in the game.

An exceptional BLU has the ability to out damage an average SAM. Does this mean that BLU is a better DD than SAM?

Know what else works for tanking a lot of mobs? Double march and utsusemi. -50% PDT isn't doing a lot for you when you can count to fucking 3. And when it's not a factor? Try capped recast, 400 damage stoneskin, capped PDT, capped MDT, extra MDB, 30 damage phalanx, over 100% Spell interruption rate down, and the ability to be completely in control of making sure slow is on a mob.

The point is that either can tank fine, but when shit hits the ground one is significantly better than the other.

Point is, paladins can get good PDT if needed. Nin generally idle in a bit more, which is definitely nice, but it's not what you're trying to make it out to be. As someone said, every job in this game can tank with shadows - nin is no different, and tbh it's the job I go to if I want to tank something while not engaged, but that's because nothing is really that hard to tank, it shares gear with my sam, and I leveled it back when I thought it was a decent tank. I have no desire to level or smn burn paladin to 75 and then have to go through the effort of gearing it.

The only thing I can think of where nin is an ideal tank is when you're fighting something that stun will help on every time it's up (which also implies "and you don't have a blm to do it". And this does come up a few times (Erebus if you didn't bring a black mage...though granted a rdm can solo it still, but if you want to straight tank it...for Feuerunke stunning slowgas helps a ton, etc), but really a black mage can do it too, so it's nothing special. And I guess nin may be a bit better for solo-duo holding a few mobs than paladin (but rdm still beats nin there).

Finally, there is no golden # where a PDT set suddenly makes you invincible. You seem to think that once you hit 50%, you can't be touched. Don't get me wrong, 50% is better than 46% or 41% or whatever, but you're singling this out and focusing so hard on "it's still not 50%" that you've lost sight on reality and just what it does / what you're giving up to get it. May I ask how your nins MDT/MDB set is? 'cause it's worse than a rdm or pld (not to mention MDB traits on rdm). And would you like to factor shield block mitigation into your overall mitigation formula for PDT? Or are you content with the idea that 50% PDT is unbeatable, and 49% is just trash regardless what other tools exist?

Sorry, there is absolutely no logic to anything you are posting. And again, the only job I traditional-style tank with is nin (though I'm obviously in the camp of DD-tank with sam/nin in general).

I'd be the first to admit that magic is NIN's weakest point, but it's not so bad with the above set.


However, the reason i keep talking about 50% pdt is because it's the most reliable source of damage reduction in the game. shielding, evading, counter are all chance based, and due to the very nature of chance, you can get a string of full damage hits which can kill you, depending on what is hitting you and with what. It works when stunned, terror'd petrified, asleep, blinded/flashed, everything.
50% pdt doesnt leave anything to chance, it directly reduces the damage you take by half, no matter what. Other jobs can do this too, but the only job that loses nothing from swapping to a full pdt set is RDM. pld loses tp used to atonement and shield, sam loses it's main enmity generation source.
