Julius Peppers(notes), a four-time Pro Bowl defensive end, is a Chicago Bear.

ESPN.com’s John Clayton reports a source as saying the Bears and the league’s top free agent have finalized a six-year deal. The proposed contract with the Bears is expected to pay him about $40 million over the first three years.

Peppers, 30, a North Carolina native and the Panthers’ second overall pick from UNC in 2002, will be playing football for a team outside the state for the first time.

Last year, the Panthers used the franchise tag on Peppers, giving him a one-year guaranteed deal worth $16.7 millon. The team declined to use that designation on him this year.

Peppers was a starter for Carolina from Day 1, and his resume includes three consecutive Pro Bowl appearances from 2004-06 before he had a poor 2007 season where he only recorded 2 1/2 sacks.

The Panthers moved Peppers from left defensive end to the right side this season, and his numbers returned. He had 10 1/2 sacks last season and has 81 over his eight-year career, all with Carolina.
