There's a sense in some league circles that only a truly special running back is worthy of a top-ten draft pick.

If so, it means that some regard Clemson's C.J. Spiller as a truly special running back.

We're hearing talk of teams possibly trying to invade the lower reaches of the top 10 in order to get a crack at Spiller, with rumors currently focusing on the Dolphins and the Giants.

The Dolphins currently hold the No. 12 pick; the Giants are at 15.

Well, Spiller would supplant Brown if another team wants to pay him more than Miami and give Miami a 1st round pick (for a RB that can't even run right now).

This gets me to thinking, if, let's say, St. Louis wants to get out of their 1st overall pick, couldn't they theoretically sign a 1st round tendered RFA? Like, let's say, they pick up Marshall. Wouldn't Denver have to take the 1st overall pick?

Yes.

Why would they "want to get out of" their first round pick again?

so that they can pass on a franchise qb or DT in order to have a malcontent at receiver. DUH

Well, until they have a rookie salary cap, you're looking at spending 80+ million on an unproven rookie (40+ million guaranteed), or you could sign a proven player on first round tender and possibly save money in the process without tying up your entire franchises assets into an unknown. Marshall was an example, there's a lot of 1st round RFAs.

But it has been like that for years, and teams haven't been just freely trading away the #1 pick. And Marshall has plenty of baggage, maybe if they could get Calvin Johnson it would make sense. Otherwise there is no way unless they were having serious financial problems and hated Bradford.
