    Penmanship Advice

For a long time now my writing has looked quite poor but legible, more so my print than cursive. I've had to, at times, have a friend or family member to fill out forms because of it (that and they normally demand they do it after seeing my writing). I've tried writing slower which looks slightly better but seems still pretty off.

Any advice on ways to improve?

Do people still write in cursive? Other than signatures?

Just for signatures usually for me or sometimes combine with my print when taking notes at a fast pace.

But I was mostly looking for print though not so much cursive

You have no idea. I work at a UPS in Iowa, and you would not believe the number of packages we get with hand written cursive labels. Makes it unbelievably hard to tell where a package is going when you can hardly read a word written on the labels. Also, the number of people who abbreviate shit they shouldn't, like the name of a town. Yeah, you tell me how many towns in your state share the same initials. Especially shit that ends in "City."

Then again, I could go on for like, hours with useless shit you shouldn't do if you want your package to have it's best chance to show up unscathed and on time.

I write in half-cursive half-print when taking notes. No one else can seem to decipher it, though. Probably doesn't help that a lot of my letters end up looking the same and have to be put into context to understand.

    Can't you just scan->type->print?

Shit, I don't think I've written in cursive since middle school. My signature is literally gibberish, and nobody that I know really writes in cursive. Or writes for that matter, 'tis the age of typing.

grab a drafting book. there are a few differant styles used for lettering. If you are going for legibility, there is little better than that stuff. they come with the paper to practice your lettering on with guidelines and everything.

At first, it takes a bit to get use to. After all your retraining the muscle memory in your hands. But, i must say that changing how i write was a great thing to do. Everyone can understand my writing, and that is the entire point of writing someting down in the first place.

Regarding typing, I would usually always go for this but sometimes forms and if a friend needed to read my notes on something etc I have to write it out.

Wasn't quite sure what you mean by better than that stuff, as I was going more for neatness which I suppose is legibility since it can be read (if it wasn't note taking) but looks poor.

it took an act of my boss to change mine.

i had shit for handwriting. no i mean people going "seriously, this is the worse hand writing ive ever seen" all the time.

work changed that recently. i became a little more self concious over the whole thing. my boss, who i think so highly of, told a group at an inventory "dont have him do that paperwork, he has the worse writing in the district"

i found out later that my employees could not read my notes until my assistant saw them and would decipher it for them.

both of those events happened recently and instead of practicing or coaching, ive simply changed my writing.

i think you understand what things should look like, like i do. so simply take your time, and write the letters out like they should be written... and over time youll get used to it. worked for me

I prefer writing in cursive and I don't think I've ever had anyone ask what it was I'd written down, but then again, this has also resulted in my signature looking rather plain and perhaps easy to forge.

Sometimes I'll catch myself writing in print, though. Usually happens when a short message suddenly gets too long and I just decide to finish it that way.

I can write in beautiful cursive because my father has beautiful penmanship and I copied him from a young age. My handwriting looks like it dropped out of the 19th century, not that annoying round girly handwriting crap with hearts as tittles.

I would recommend finding some examples that you like and just forcing yourself to copy that until you do it naturally.

I really hope you can change your handwriting because your future spouse/partner will appreciate it. My husband has shit handwriting, even printing, and I have to fill out every form ever, and that's annoying.

My writing isn't that great but I can definitely make it more legible if I know I'm writing for someone else.

My problem with writing is print is I don't space letters properly if I write it fast so I have to slow it down and focus on specifically what I'm writing for it look any decent.

    Same with my cursive.

That's part of the guy code. No guy should be able to write/print better than any female ever.
