So how long can I get away with wearing my Ludroth cap. I look awesome I don't want to give it up lol.

I am totally stuck on Barroth right now. He moves so fast and runs around constantly that I either get trounced or can't hit him. And my second attempt Great Jaggi and Qurupeco showed up and wailed on me. Any tips for him? Any builds or strategies that work better than others?
Also in single player mode I was doing the mission where you have to trap Qurupeco and some crazy dragon thing showed up that I had never seen before and started shooting fireballs at me it was crazy. It was in the deserted island area. I thought new monsters didn't show up there until after you had fought it at least once in a quest.
Quropeco can summon Great Jaggi, Royal Ludroth, or Rathian (the dragon) on low rank missions.
Baroth is a bitch and a half. When he is raging, it becomes almost pointless to fight him head-on. Basically what you want is a weapon with at least green-sharpness and you want to do small, safe attacks while he is raging. (This is best done while he is doing that x2 tail attack.)
Zoo, make some dung bombs and carry them with you. If you hit the other monsters that show up (or the one you're fighting) they'll move to a different area after a moment or two.
I seem to have gotten Barroth down. Like Cha-Cha says, float like butterfly flee like cockroach or whatever. Its a lot of dodge work, then you gotta find the sweet spots. Remember after he charges at you that he swings his tail behind him as well, so don't try and time an attack the second the charge ends at his rear. Also, he'll turn around nearly immediately, so a roll towards him might help you get in range and set you up. after the tail swing.
I have to have green sharpness to reliably wail on him, most of any less than that bounce right off. I tend to play him close to the back of the legs and tail, keep watching him and time your attacks. One of the switch axe's attacks is straight up swing and straight down swing, makes it a lot easier to tag him with his tail so high up. Maybe give that a shot.
edit: Forgot. bring a pitfall trap and a shock trap with you. Having them stuck there for several seconds buys some nice hit time for you. Shock traps especially because then you can strike the tail. If you've got a hammer, wail on the head with a pitfall trap. Knock his block off.
Ah thanks for the tips. That explains why Rathian showed up. That really sucked. I was doing well and then a giant fireball hit me and I was down almost instantly after that.
As for Barroth I guess I will have to do a bit more farming first and see if I can finish upgrading my weapon again and then just do a lot of running around.
Never mind didn't read the posts above me about barroth.
Do I need to do all the capture quests to progress in the story?
Will I be able to go to the underwater forest like how I can travel to the moga woods whenever?
An what does the abilities constitution/Whim/Combo Factor do?
I think you need to do all the quests in offline mode to get access to the next quest levels. Online it seems to be certain key quests that progress you along and you need to have HR rank a certain level to get the urgent quest to progress.
When you get to either 3 or 4 star quests you get a set of quests that are basically go run around in X zone for 50 minutes. Like 5 minutes in a coupon appears in your blue chest, and you can take it out and toss it into red to end your run out there.
No idea about the abilities. I'm still picking armor because it looks good, God help me.
Rathian successfully cockslapped. Didn't get his tail off or wyvern tear this time though, but I found the Barroth to be more difficult tbh. Ended with the Phial explosion move, was epic.
I really hate Diablos when he goes into rage mode. I get knocked all over the place when he does that. I can read his moves easily but sometimes he does it at the right time and almost kills me.
I hear deviljoe appears in 31+ hr quests free roaming?
Whats a phail explosive move? an I still can't beat barroth. He has to be the most annoying monster I have ever fought in a videogame.
On classic controller pro setup 1, you keep pressing the + button and your switch axe opens up in the center and emits the elementa/status on your phial. When you keep pressing it you basically empty the meter and get a little explosion lol.
Has to be done in sword mode.
Whim, I believe (no wiki in front of me) reduces the chances of a Pick or Bugnet to break. Combo Rate... not sure actually, though it surely has to do with item combinations. Combo Success is obvious, Rate I would have to look up.
Barroth was a bit hard at first, but he gets easier like any of them. I duoed him online for my friends rank up Urgent, during which my friend had to "AFK Phone" & got himself a couple Barroth charges in the face... woke up in camp =P
Right now I am farming Agnaktor or w/e. Got 4 claws in two runs thank god so now I just need a bunch of hides/scales. I figured it would be a nice set for my Undertaker Lance if I decide to learn how to use it.
Still only about HR22 or 23 online. I did one Blood Sport run & it was painful. Only one death though. Not sure if its over or not but don't really care to do it for the event lance either way.
edit: whoops, meant http://monsterhunter.wikia.com/wiki/MH3:_Offline_Quests
The guild sweetheart usually hints at what quest to take next
Barroth you basically just hit and run. Don't try to do anything fancy with him because it might leave you wide open. Being a GS main, I start by trying to get his tail off, then I just focus on hitting his legs until he goes down.
For me, the only time I can get a charge move on him is when he shakes the mud off which is a huge risk (protip: rotate the movement stick as fast as you can to get the mud off fast) and when he rolls around in the mud to get more (charge a few steps behind the spot where he turns on his back to roll because he rolls back to that same spot.)
As for armor skills, you're welcome
On another note, we should schedule a time where some of us can meet up with each other be it for HR building or helping someone get monster parts. Although the friend list doesn't rely on friend codes n stuff, it's still pretty mediocre.
I'd be down to meet up sometime. My GF plays too, and occasionally a friend of ours as well. He's a rank or two behind us.
That god damn slug is the one I've had the most trouble with so far. Perhaps I was just a little more underprepped than usual. Only had the antidotes they gave to me. I put that fish on easy mode when I went back to switchaxe too, I guess I just have to learn this monster's moves.
Having trouble finding an open spot to attack this. He's really a douche when you get in close and I get some swinging time, he roars almost every time. Pisses me off to no end. I want to farm him for a piece of equipment for my uh... Ludroth everything but the dress set. Going to bring some traps and shit this time. Bastard slug.
Edit: I DID beat the sob. Had less than 10 mins remaining. Christ I beat Hunter Killer in less time.
lol I think I got to the level of skill where now I can notice when my teammates suck. Like I "/check" a guy and he has like 5 armor pieces each belonging to a different set and only one skill active(Negate some status effect). I have to say stuff like "No, we have to wait until its limping until we set a trap - yes, I am sure - okay you waste your trap then, I have the free one!" I got one particularly bad room. Had like a combination of 6-7 rage quitters and three mission fails a span of two or three hours. No idea why I stayed so long.
Currently I am using a mix of Rathian and Rathalos gear. I actually two sets and I am not quite sure which is best... for both I use a Dragon Resist+10 talisman to offset that weakness. Not sure if it is worth it. (And if it matters, I use lance - Warrior's Lance)
Set 1: 3/5 Rathian, 2/5 Rathalos (more defense, by a little)
Health+20
Fire Res+10
Attack+ (Low)
Dragon Res+10
Nearsighted
Set 2: 4/5 Rathian, 1/5 Rathalos
Health+50
Fire Res+20(or whatever is the next tier, forget...)
Dragon Res+10
Nearsighted
The first set sounds better so I use it more, but I am really not sure.
As for progress with monsters I feel like I've tamed Rathalos and Barioth for the most part... but Diablos is way harder than those two.
EDIT: Attack vs Elemental Attack. Is one better than the other? Which is better? What about a weapon(lets say SnS) with elemental attack but lower attack vs a weapon with much higher attack and no elemental attack?
Elemental is better for weapons who hit fast (SnS, LS, Lance)
Raw damage is generally better for GS and Hammer
But how would go about telling which weapon is better? How much elemental damage is needed to make up for lower attack. I really have no clue how stats work in MH.
EDIT: Also my spear is pretty short compared to what I see other hunters using. Is there actually a difference in range?
