Depends on how close the damage is between weapon. IF they're similar base attack, then get the one with higher affinity. Also depends on the weapon. I think a fast hitting weapon like Sword and Shield benefits from status attack attributes because of how often they hit more so than something that attacks slowly.

Affinity and status procs are unrelated. In the case of the 0% vs. 15% (lower atk) weapons, the 0% almost always wins, with few exceptions. You can do the math to figure out the adjusted attack of the 15% affinity weapon with:

    [(WeaponATK * 1.25) * 0.15] + (WeaponATK * 0.85)

If it is lower than the 0% ones base attack, then the 0% one is better.

However, there is a bit of a gray area in the fact that Affinity increases your attack at knock back/knock down, which would lead to more free hits/easy damage. But if you want to achieve the strongest base attack, you should check the weapons using the formula above.

Alright makes sense. I was unsure if the affinity would affect the paralyze 'damage' or have anything to do with the proc rate.

Now if I wanted to up the affinity in that equation I'd raise the 0.15 to 0.45 or whatever my rate is, correct?

I can't wait to get off work and play tonight. Last night I was farming Rathalos, I finished the first flame sword, the first hammer that looks like a dragon head, and I got rusted lance and rusted hammer too.

Is anyone here well versed in MH mechanics? I've had a few nagging questions I haven't been able to figure out yet. Wall of text incoming

Rewards: My understanding with the post-quest reward system is that each box has certain prereqs to *unlock* them and then a random roll takes place in each box to determine if you get phat lewt or a pile of scales. As far as I've been able to tell, the first few are just rewards for getting the quest completed. Underneath are break and capture rewards, then at the bottom are the sub quest rewards.

Now lets say I'm doing a 2x Rathian mission (don't know if it exists or not, but whatever, hypothetical Rathians). I kill the first after cutting off it's tail, breaking face and both wings. The second I break the face, a single wing and capture. I would expect quest rewards for completing the quest (hurr), full break rewards and capture rewards. Now, do I get extra rewards for breaking the face on the second one? If I got a shit roll on the first and it left a slot blank, does the second face break give me another shot at it? Do I get rewards for a single wing, or do I need to break both? Had I captured the first one would I have gotten additional cap rewards or did the 2nd open up all I was getting? Are there kill rewards, or are those just from the carves?

Affinity/Staggers: You're talking about staggering right? What I've seen from charts is that each body part takes a certain amount of damage before it triggers a stagger then resets to zero. Now, does affinity give an extra boost to that over just the increased damage from the crit? It seems to me that unless you got really lucky suddenly, you're going to be better overall with the higher damage weapon reaching that stagger limit. Coming from FFXI, actually saying "X is better than Y" rather than "X is better at Y in this particular instance given these conditions" is fucking with my head.

Also, does an affinity crit cause 25% more damage, or just give 25% more base attack for that swing (does it effect elemental at all and where do I throw that 25% when calculating damage)? Does stagger damage decay at all or reset at certain points (rage, stamina deplete, zoning)? Monsters seem to build resistance to traps after each use (spending less time stuck); does the same apply for dung / flash / sonic bombs? I feel like I've seen the Raths ignore flash bombs after a while, but that could very well be because my aim sucks (I'm still adjusting to the new hit boxes for those in Tri...)

I'm forgetting other stuff that I was curious about, but that's probably enough for now. Answers to any of that stuff are appreciated.

    So far so good.

You will get shit for breaking anything. If you break 20 rathian faces in a mission, you will get 20 of the possible drops for breaking said faces. As for wings, it depends on the monster. Some monsters will need both horns for a drop (like Diablos). Kill rewards are from carves. While it might not seem like you ever want to carve, some shit you need a lot of for armor sets (scales, etc) come more often from carves. This actually happens frequently. Rarer shit is usually from capture, though.

Monsters do resist stuff sort of, it depends on the monster. Also other monsters like Lugarius get out of Pitfall traps faster when in rage, for example.

Sorry I couldn't answer everything, though.

Deviljho in a little over a min. It's a spoiler I guess if you don't wanna see what it looks like before you face it.

So going in and fighting Barioth with the flame sword made the fight do-able. It wasn't easy because he is still one fast bastard however I went in with the flame long sword and a pitfall trap and a shock trap and tried the strategy of pitfalling him immediately then using that to break his wing going back grabbing the second pitfall and then breaking the other wing then breaking the fangs. Worked decently well and there were only a couple close calls where he had me pinned against a wall and my health was low.

Now I move on to Urugaan and Agnaktor, hopefully I can try the Caedus quest this weekend and finish the offline content.

Agnaktor is far less annoying that Uru for me. I farmed up the low level Agnaktor set in about 6-7 runs? Uru I have still only fought once offline and i hated it. Online i actually found it less painful in the Blood Sport Event Quest, but then I only managed to find a decent group for that for one run so I am still short a ticket.

Grats on Barioth. He really is a dick.

Deviljho cracks me the hell up. I just experienced him yesterday. Was doing high-rank Quru with some people in D.Island and all was going well. Quru flew to another zone so I decided to harvest some honey since I was running low. As I'm harvesting, everyone makes a really panicked text and I'm thinking to myself, maybe a Rathian flew in or something.

Go to the next zone and Deviljho's snout is right in front of my face. Think I left that zone in under 5 seconds I was so panicked. Then I started laughing because it was so unexpected for me.

lol first time I saw him I about shit a brick. Not expecting that to come up behind you fighting a Peco in high rank the first time.

By the way, what's the deal with the [Advanced] quests anyway? Do you get more/rare/something drops? Monsters more difficult?

Edit: Dunno if this was still under debate but I just annihilated the Ceadeus in 1 round for a kill, no repel. Of course no dragon blood >/. Get Underwater Ballista ammo from the captain on trade to take with you. Gives you 20 shots total instead of the 10 or so just the ammo down there gives. Think that really helped, blew his horn off in like 5 hits.

At the rate of me successfully attempting to connect to the internet on this PoS system it probably wont be until tomorrow.

I hit 29 or 30 tonight... then people DC'd during my Jhen urgent and never came back. Didn't have any luck finding a group after that so I called it a night.

Just wondering if this game is cross-region compatible. When I get back to England in August I wanna play with some friends in the U.S. and I remember on the PSP game you couldn't link up and play with people if you didn't have the same region game EU/US/JP. =/

My understanding is that the online is region locked to the disc's version. So NA versions are on NA servers, Europe on another, and Japan on their own. To play with your US friends you would have to be playing on an NA copy of the game on a PAL console... or a 'modded' regionfrii console I suppose?

So when should I go to city-mode? I remember reading something about it in the thread but I have no patience to search for it now. I'm about to reach 4-star in village quests (just killed Barroth). Loving this game right now, though. Attention to environmental detail is amazing for a Wii game.

Why not just unlock everything offline? There really is no rush, just a matter of whether you feel like waiting or not. I unlocked pretty much everything offline, solo'd the gear that I wanted (I use Lagi set, Rathalos set, and Barioth set) and then go online when you feel comfortable with strategy for most mobs.

Or, just jump online right away =P
