Here's where I stand right now: I'll get this if the reviews are good, but I'm not calling it a Metroid game. That's the only way I can see myself enjoying it. In truth, I could see this coming with the changes made to Corruption, but they seem to have taken it even further now.

I have some pretty strong feelings on all the changes they're making, but I'm keeping them to myself for now, because it remains to be seen how they'll play out. I have so much I could say but I'm hoping my fears are unfounded, and that the changes work with the new style of gameplay. It's becoming clear that this is a huge departure from the past Metroid games, and I hope the new formula works, but I'm going to miss a lot of the little touches that made Metroid what it is.

Mario RPG was still a Mario Game, despite the lack of "Wahoo!" and "Here we go!" yells, and this is still a Metroid game. I don't exactly understand what makes this -not- Metroid. People said the same things when the prime trilogy began.

Again, if you want Super Metroid II, go back and play it, seriously. This can't even be called a spin-off: its the canon aftermath of Metroid Fusion.

Isn't other M supposed to be between Super Metroid And Metroid Fusion?

You call it what you want, I'll call it what I want. Mario RPG still had coins, goombas, and ? blocks. Metroid: Other M apparently won't have shootable doors (although this could still be in), upgrades you can find laying around, and energy/missile refills from enemies. Metroid means different things to different people, and for some, the changes won't affect the core of what the series is. For me, from what I can tell so far, they definitely will.

And for the upgrade thing, I can see both sides of the issue, but I'm a huge fan of finding them on the planet as opposed to being given them when some dude feels you're ready for them. Finding them makes you feel like all the work you just did beating an area and killing the boss was worthwhile, whereas getting upgrades from a commander doesn't work the same way for me. I'd be more likely to find myself asking "And why couldn't I use that beam five minutes ago? What's the point in holding back my power until Commander Jackass feels I'm ready for it?"

Now they might be able to make the new system feel right, and I'll be happy if they do. For example, you received upgrades from on high in Fusion, but you still had to work to get them, and that worked out great. But see, this is why I said I don't want to comment too much on it yet. We don't know enough. I don't like the changes I'm hearing about, but like I said, they could pull them off pretty well. Maybe. We'll see.

I'm more wary of team ninja than anything. They butchered the Ninja Gaiden franchise compared to what it was for the first 2 games for Nintendo, but this new generation of overly-flashy, overly-gory FMV-over-substance and fan-service has too much of an affect on games.

If they handle the upgrades like they did in Fusion it could still work out ok. I hope that you still have to find missile and energy tanks scattered around and those aren't just handed to you at random intervals. It'll be weird not getting drops from enemies, but I'm still really excited for the game.

They can mess around with the appearance of things, the power-up mechanics to some extent, fine, but we had better be able to sequence break and do speed runs.

I would bet a lot of money that it will be very fun, beginning to end. Whether I'm happy about the dialog or not is another thing. However, I kinda' like the idea of Samus narrating, she almost always did so in text form during the intros. I wouldn't mind her voicing over that instead, log-entry style.

I thought about mentioning that. If they get rid of the hidden missile tanks, energy tanks, and power bombs, there will be hell to pay. They might as well divide the game up into stages without exploration between areas at that point.

Yeah this is pretty much how I feel. It's going to be a great game for sure, I just don't think it will have the same feel that all the Metroids up through Echoes did. I hope I'm wrong though.

    All I know is that it's going to be a bitch doing diagonal shots on such a tiny d-pad. I need my shoulder buttons. ;_;

tbh, I'm expecting them to announce that it is stage based at some point in time.

I don't think anything has happened after Fusion, being completely disfigured and all... right?

Man, trying this now. They fucked with the jump physics and I'm already stuck like 5 minutes into Zebes after getting the morph ball and missiles unless I'm missing some hidden path.

Edit: Nevermind. God, forgot there's a run button.

Between this and Mario Galaxy 2, might have to blow some money on a Wii... ugh

A Wii is totally worth it. And it's a cheap system since there aren't too many games you'll need to buy

I need to try this, but the idea of retooled jump physics does not please me.

Not yet, and my mistake on mucking up the timeline.

Even so, that still lends credence to my viewpoint: Samus, post-Super Metroid, is probably at her absolute peak. She's got a cannon designed by the genius of the chozo and powered by the life-essence of one of the largest natural Metroids in the galaxy. I can't just see some Federation "making" weapons stronger than what she's got right now. Sure, diffusion missles were hax, but they were based solely around her ice beam technology that they researched from the collected parts of her suit.

Yeah, I want powerups and a sense of progression, but if they change things up a little bit, I certainly won't hate. Games like Gears of War 2 taught me that plot progression can be as tasty as leveling up or getting that shiny new Castlevania whip or sword.

The dev did his best to prevent all means of doing things out of order in the game. To do so, he had to retool the jump physics, walljump physics (you now lose forward momentum quickly after walljumping), and put in a 3-bomb limit for morphball.

Speaking of walljump, it's a combined ability with the hi-jump boots, which you get about an hour in, incase you were wondering why you couldn't do any prior.

Game is a fucking maze though, there's a lot of backtracking, and it requires you to know how to walljump properly as well as morphballing from a jump towards the ceiling. There's also a lot of hidden walls, some of which are needed to be discovered to continue onwards. Feels like Super Metroid Hard Mode, especially when mobs have 3x the health, which can get tedious mashing the fire button.

Some things hit really fucking hard, too. Got two-shotted from full health by one of those giant hopper thingies that can only be hurt by missiles. Beat Kraid earlier, but taking a break for now.
