I'm trying to maintain a level head here because it's conjecture, but from the clips we have so far it looks an awful lot like they're implying that Samus was, from birth, some kind of lab experiment under the watch of the Galactic Federation...when the original universe cast her instead as an orphaned civilian who was raised by the Chozo (it's where she originally got the suit) and became a bounty hunter to fight pirates for revenge against them destroying her home+family.

All those scenes are just Samus in a federation hospital or whatever because she got fucked up by Mother Brain and the last Metroid.

The first 30 seconds of the gameplay trailer still screams to me "lab experiment turned military weapon" no matter how many times I watch it. I'll admit I come to that conclusion based on a lot of assumptions about the scenes, since we have very little context, but I can't imagine those scenes were cut together in that order or with the amount of detail they have by accident.

I wish retro was making this one too, I wonder why a different team was brought in.

She is a lab experiment because of her ability to use the Chozo technology. This also ties in with the fact that she is apparently put on a very short leash by the military in terms of restrictions on the weaponry she is allowed to use. It simply implies that she is being "used" this time around instead of "hired." This doesn't infringe on any Metroid universe lore as far as I am concerned.

Sweet, I always wanted a Metroid game with huge boobage and bouncing.

Quickly becoming disappointed. First person required for missile shots, no separate button for that? Really? The toggle between first- and third-person action seems iffy at best, and I'd have to agree with the author of this article that the addition of other characters pretty much ruins the feel of the Metroid games from the get-go.. meh.

I'll definitely still give it a shot considering I'm not planning on paying for it. I doubt it'll have the feeling of a typical metroid game but I'm hoping it'll be good regardless.

The gameplay absolutely reeks of team ninja, but I do like her running speed. Its a shame Team Ninja never has any concept of weight and momentum in their games. I know she's agile in that suit, but if her footsteps clomp like that, she should require a bit of inertia to stop.

Complaining for the sake of complaining is what I do!

It better be good or Team Ninja is going to get some huge shit.

If it's worse than Metroid2/Prime Hunters (both still great games, but they're crap compared to the others) than something went really wrong. I think I might just not spoil myself on information and just go on in this one with low expectations.

Funny, I thought she was running too fast. :/

Overall, I feel like the general control scheme of your basic wii-mote is too mediocre to make something like this comfortable to play. I'm assuming movement is handled by the nunchuck, but panning the camera (if it's even possible to do) would seem odd without shoulder buttons like PS3/360 controllers have.

Folks're jumping to conclusions way hard. I like the new runspeed, Prime/2/3 always felt a little leaden with how fast you could run. I also like that enemies appear, die, then you keep running, there's no hanging around you're just running and gunning.

What I don't like are those fucking cutscenes. "My former superior officer *INSERT EROTIC FANFIC HERE BOYS AND GIRLS*" I guess terrible acting is a Team Ninja staple but I don't like it in my Metroid. The GBA games had better storytelling than I'm seeing in this short snippet of Other M.

If anything the run speed is reminiscent of 2D Metroids. The missile looked a little clunky in that video but I don't think it's fair to judge without actually knowing how they work.

The more I see of it the more Other M makes me think of Fusion, and I guess to some people that's a bad thing. Personally I liked Fusion, so I've got not problem with it. I just hope it can keep the pace of the 2D metroids without sacrificing the length of the Prime series.

So I just watched that video trailer and saw nothing that would give the impression that this game is gonna be good or bad.

As far as the 30 minute review, whenever a game starts off slow, most people tend to not be very impressed anyway until the first major conflict (or boss fight). What I took from his criticism was basically "This is something I am not familiar with" which doesn't necessarily mean something is bad. His 30 mins hurt his argument even more because you can't really play a Metroid for 30 mins and get a feel for much of anything since you probably don't even have any of her power-ups unlocked which enhances the core gameplay as you go on. The control criticisms seems a little petty because everyone doesn't have the same finger dexterity or reaction time with a controller which is why different control schemes exist. However that's assuming you can change them. The only way I'd personally be annoyed ,which is more of a personal issue, is whether the game will be able to keep up with my fingers once I get comfortable with the controls.

Cutscenes make me cringe. Not a very good idea to take a long time silent character and turn her into your standard JRPG/anime heroin. I was originally pretty excited for this game, now not so much. i'll wait and see what everybody else thinks before i decide if i'm gonna drop money on it or not.

I liked fusion too, especially for the terror atmosphere of the X Parasite in her suit chasing her around everywhere. The plot wasn't terrible either, even if a little un-canonical.

With this, though, she sounds like (and is treated like, apparently) a rookie who doesn't know which end of her gun to point, despite all of the other context being that she's already a veteran at this, having previously been in the GF and then taking down Mother Brain, twice, as a mercenary (the flashback you see in the most recent trailer is the encounter in Super Metroid). And we've already covered the fact that it's completely non-canon to ANY previous title in the series; Samus was raised by the Chozo, her suit was their technology, a gift to her. Her actions against the space pirates in Metroid 1 are arguably what got her on the map with the GF, there was no direct interaction with them in her history.

Every metroid game (or at least all the ones in recent history) starts with all the powerups enabled, then you lose them. They've even said they liked this formula because it gives new players a tease into "look at how awesome you can be" before making you earn it all back. So he probably did get a look at all powerups unlocked if the gameplay wasn't hacked in from some other part of it (odds are good, especially given the talk about the cutscenes and the early missile restriction).

Secondly, I don't remember if that kotaku review covers it, but did you know missiles aren't going to be an ammo item? You regenerate them automatically just by standing still and doing a wiimote dance. Health too, but only your first tank. Swear to god, I'm not kidding. This is so far removed from proper metroid design it's not even funny; ammo is supposed to be precious, if you want the luxury of using it more often then you need to make the effort to obtain the tanks. The game was always designed to make sure you had what you needed where absolutely necessary, but outside that scarcity was important to the atmosphere. Health too, you can't tell me you've never experienced a metroid title where you're running around for a very long time with less than 50 health, trying desperately to make your way to a save station and not die. The rush is amazing, and they're just throwing it away.

Thirdly, on control quibbles, I don't have a huge problem with the first/third person exchange, but when you have stupid things like, oh, I don't know, not being able to turn your head in first person mode at all I have to wonder just what they're smoking. The shooting just looks so god awful uncoordinated too, you have to be facing just the right way and be far ENOUGH away for the logic to actually lock onto the creature...it's just retarded.

Oh and this IS a petty quibble, but DOORS SHOULDN'T OPEN BY THEMSELVES.

Your criticism is valid and for the most part I agree with you, but literally every single negative thing I see said about this game revolves around how "it's not enough like previous games", or "such-and-such departure from the previous games is blasphemous and therefore terrible".

Even if this is just a Metroid game in name only, doesn't mean it'll automatically be bad. It seems like it's a little early to be freaking out, what with a whole month before the game is even out. And I'm not sure when everyone started listening to kotaku...

I actually think that this game does look really fun to play, the thing that I dont like though is the whole turning the wiimote in your hand to fire missles and then back to sideways to resume movement. I am skeptical on the missle format as well, with the not moving while shooting, and I didnt know that you couldnt pan around (move your head) as well. It is gonna be great platforming, I wont doubt that, but it looks like they are going for a more acradey feel for this one. I will love it just because it is Metroid, but I am afraid for how good it may or may not be, this might just be the bastard child version of the franchise.

I think it's valuable to consumers debating a purchase decision if a reviewer can say 'in 30 minutes of play I found myself dissatisfied.' Yeah he didn't platinum trophy the game. That's because he didn't like it.

Similar accusations get lobbied at any game that takes too long to get off the starter blocks and let the gamer dig into the meat at will. FFXIII was the most notorious recent example. If an action game can't give you a good impression after 30 minutes something is disquietingly wrong.
