I've been playing for a couple (4-5) hours now.

    My opinions:
The storyline is complete utter shit. Prepare to have one of your childhood heroes completely ruined in ways you could not possibly imagine.

The gameplay is actually pretty decent. The strange controls took a while to get used to, and I still don't like the whole "switch to pointing at the screen to fire missiles" thing. It slows down the pacing of the game and it often results in you getting hit due to the sketchy wiimote controls.

Once you get used to it, the game is certainly fun. The cutscenes are long, but few and far between. The game is as linear as Fusion, in that you end up in an area you have to get through, but there are plenty of side areas to explore. The enemies and bosses are pretty interesting as well. There are some new items and weapons this time around, and some of them are pretty interesting. Despite the crappy Wii graphics, there are some great environments to explore as well.

One major complaint though, the quick time events are fucking ridiculous. It's not like Bayonetta or God of War either. Sometimes something will burst through a wall or through the floor and try to grab you. Fail to do what the game considers "the right thing", and you are dead. You don't get a prompt telling you what that "right thing" is. Expect to die to these the first time you see them. Sometimes you get lucky and mash your way out, but it usually doesn't work out. (Enjoy the beginning of sector 3, lol)

There was more than one review posted though. Nevermind the fact that BG is a very small community of gamers to begin with. My statement was meant in the general sense, not locally.

Most people don't recognize the issues with Famitsu nevermind the issues with most reputable gaming magazines that review stuff.

The only "daddy" that samus should have daddy issues about is her adopted chozo "father". If she's pining over Adam, simply because he was a large focus of Metroid Fusion, then ugh.

Can you skip the events? Or are you forced to go through them? The game looks fun, but adding an actual story to a Metroid game is just odd.

That's going to suck then. Since Samus' voice seems annoying to me.

Sounds like something any consumer of Team Ninja games will be right at home with.

I'll definitely echo that this game is a lot harder than I thought it'd be. Bosses feel like a real challenge until you figure out their attack patterns. Still, fighting looks pretty badass, especially some of the finishing moves.

The only complaint I have so far is that playing for long periods with the d-pad makes your thumb feel raw, I'll probably play with a band-aid tomorrow. Analog stick definitely would have been nice lol

For the bosses, is it just a lot of attack pattern recognition, or are you forced to enter 1st-person to aim at specific points, which in turn leaves you vulnerable due to no mobility while looking about? I just get the feeling they wouldn't allow the auto-target to do all the work for you on set pieces like those.

Visually the game is ugly in comparison to the Prime series from what I'm seeing in videos/snapshots, but I realize it was probably a worthwhile trade-off just to keep loading to an extreme minimal given the fast pace of Other M compared to Prime's slower take on the series.
(I remember a couple of the door in Prime2/3 that I came across taking a good 15 seconds before anything happened ;/ )

Yea there's almost no loading whatsoever, the game really goes for a whole cinematic presentation and I guess that really helps it out.

The boss fights are pretty exhilerating, a lot of the boss fights are dodging correctly (the dodge mechanic works phenomenally well, btw) then using your blaster/charge shot/etc to kill them, or maneuver so you can target their weak points with a missle. Bosses have different ways of killing them but you definitely have to experiment a little to figure out their attack pattern so you don't get creamed. You can restore your health if it's in the red (gives you 1 tank back) but it takes a LONG time to do this and you can easily get picked off, so it's better to not get hit at all. You will definitely be switching back and forth between modes quickly, but the whole transition happens almost instantly (which I wasn't expecting) so you definitely have to leave yourself some room to fire a missle, but if you're fast enough you can easily avoid damage.

edit: oh and you can dodge while in first person

Judging from the trailers and reviews, Other M's story feels like a masterpiece compared to FFXIII.

I'm confused. Are you mad they slammed the game and gave it 6.25 or are you just mad because it's Gameinformer? Granted I haven't played it yet, but I have some seen some of the VOs (which are fucking terrible) and the fact that Samus seemingly gives up all her powers just because some guy tells her to is pretty adverse to the bad ass we've been playing over the last two decades. I was a little shocked at how high they scored it since he just seemed to piss on it the whole time.

G4 and GameInformer gave it the worst reviews out there, some of their complaints are valid (it definitely feels like something has been lost in translation, either that or the game comes off as incredibly sexist as Samus drones on and on about subjugating herself to Adam), at least to an extent. I would say the gametrailers review is pretty fair as far as strengths/weaknesses go.

The gamefaqs boards for this game are fucking hilarious btw. People are still freaking out about how bad they think the game is going to be, even though it's actually, yknow, pretty good.

It's a different direction towards the "lose all powers at the beginning" type of thing for the Metroid series. While I agree it sounds stupid but she respects him enough to limit her skills to test herself.

In Fusion she names the computer Adam to remember him by. If anyone else saw the secret message in fusion then there is hope for another 2D sidescrolling Metroid game. At least I hope that is true.

One thing I've seen both sides on that I'm curious for people who've actually played it, how well is the swap between third to first person? G4/GI says terrible since you constantly to realign the reticle when you pop in (I guess it doesn't have a default area when you pop in?) others say it's perfect. It appears that you can slide in and out of it quickly enough, but I get hung up enough in FPS without having to randomly guess where my reticle is going to be.

If anyone remembers, there was a bit of self-narration in Super Metriod, which I loved. Seeing Samus facing the screen with only one visible, blinking eye gave her a real sense of humanity while always fighting in places seemingly devoid of it.

I don't have a Wii, so I won't get or play this game, but I'll be digesting the plot later because I'm a rabid old-school Metroid Fan, and anything that links Samus with Super Metroid is good in my book.

All I wanna know is: does she whip out Hyper Beam at the end of the game or not?! That's like her "child's" legacy! She's gotta unload it!
