Ouch. I thought I wanted more time to play Civ, but not that badly!
I don't know why, but the longer a multiplayer game has been played, the less likely it is that it will ever be loaded up again. Probably exponentially too.
How much does everyone rely on their Civ's Unique Units when warring? I find a large number of them become obsolete quite early in the game so don't mind picking a Civ (or going random) and fighting with generic military units. As long as mine are a better tech / more numerous / are on better terrain.
I noticed some units, like say, the Maori warrior, keep the promotions that make them special even when upgraded. However some really nice unique units like the Byzantine cataphract loses its special promotion when upgraded to a knight. It's a major bummer, I'm surprised they don't let them keep some sort of bonus while they are still horse units.
Perhaps it's not as much of an issue on the slower game modes, but on fast (usually picked for multiplayer) so many of the unique units are obsolete before you get to do anything with them.

I try to pick civs that have units that obsolete late/mid-game or are mostly useful throughout the game. for example, Zulu. Their ability applies to ALL units, which is great, plus the building applies to Landsknechts which never obsolete, which means you can get some UNGODLY strong helicopters. And Impis don't obsolete until Riflemen, I think. Anything in the Lancer upgrade line after Pikemen (Unfortunately, not Impis, which replace Pikemen) is great, because you can get them through Landsknechts. I also tend to prefer civs with unique buildings/tiles instead of two units, unless one unit never obsoletes, like 'murica or Japan.
I wish they'd make it so that your unique units never obsoleted, so that you could always build them and then upgrade them. Sometimes it wouldn't be worth it (Cataphracts, any other unit that doesn't get bonus promotions, etc) but most of the time it would.
