I think a lot of it has to do with the dumbing down of games in general. Civ4 is just easier to play then 3 or 2. A lot let manual changes need to be made, the cities run themselves. Not that 4 isnt fun, its just less involved, by default.

Yep - I hold it responsible for my degree being a class lower than I could have gotten :D Loved that game so much, the head-to-head play over a network is great, it's got some really good scenarios to add into it - it's just an awesome game... unfortunately my copy of it disappeared into the black hole that is my younger brother's bedroom and was never seen again, and my backup copy was nicked by my stepfather and suffered a similar fate.

It also had the joyously infinitely exploitable cannonball express railroad into the opponent's city strategy - how many hours of delightful German stomping could be had with that. Civ 3 was disappointing, Revolutions is fun for a quick hour or so's timesink, 4's pretty but also too damned easy to win compared to the sheer perfection that the second one was. I can still kill an afternoon frighteningly easily on 4 though.

Civ 1 was good apart from the AI having the annoying habit of hooking you into a peace treaty and then boxing your city in so you couldn't move without having to start another war with them.

Also Civ2 had the wonder movies - the wonder movies were awesomeness! Am now going to end up looking up all the best ones on youtube now I've remembered them. They've never quite managed to replace them in the subsequent games.

^ yup, not sure if there is any nostalgia involved but 2 was the best in terms of the fun factor. It was revolutionary in the genre.

4 was dumbed down too much maybe. Still a very deep game but I missed the enjoyment I got from 2nd.

Oh and Deity difficulty level was punishing in 2. I could swear the AI cheats up there but still, it was fun haha.

Fucking A this is the truth. I swear, the computer had unlimited funds with which to purchase Wonders the turn they start building them and they randomly place Settlers all over the map. I refuse to believe that two turns after starting a marathon game the computer has mastered seafaring beyond the 1/2 tiles from the coastline.

Deity level, its pretty much war from 4000 BC to 2000 AD...can't rest or the computer players will grow too strong...

    Cheated a little but...
Loved 2 turn science in Civ 2 - Spaceships in 1000 AD anyone?

Civ 3 and Civ 4 are fun too but they capped science speed so you can't do hyper-speed research.

After the first few games which I barely won in Civ 4 at Prince/Monarch(quite balanced I must say), I got addicted in doing "Save & reload" to maximize village benefits and battles. From then on, its pretty much challenging myself to see what kind of scores I can get. (Personal Record ~60k...)
-> Its always fun to send a Battleship to sink a Trireme/Galley.

    gruuuuuuuuuunghghh want so bad

and while i confirm 0 buyz on the dumbing down of Civ 4, after the expansion packs added the espionage mechanic and roughly six trillion civs+leaders+uniqueunits+uniquebuildings it was the broadest of any Civilization game and arguably the deepest, it does make me :[ to know they are dispensing almost entirely with religion in V.

but combat looks to be radically altered for the better which has always been at the heart of my warmongering heart's Civilization experience and i cannot wait until they open the doors tomorrow morning, first week of the semester be damned i don't need syllabi i have wonders to build.

    Yeah, pretty much.

Good thing I'm on unemployment until November, I don't know if I'd want to go to work...
