Keep in mind this quake was 35 kilometers below the surface, and Haiti's was 13 kilometers below the surface. Chile's also happened undersea, which is why below you'll see me talk about all the Tsunami warnings/watches/advisories.

They've also had 25+ aftershocks in Chile, highest one was 6.9 earthquake which quickly followed the 8.8 quake. KEEP in mind, this quake is 500-1000x (7.0 measures 32 megatons in TNT force; 8.8 measures almost 32 gigatons) stronger in intensity than the Haitian earthquake, but it happened 200 miles off the coast from Santiago (nearest major city).

3 million people felt severe tremors, and 9 million felt strong-very strong). Richter scale is a logarithmic based scale, and intensity difference is exponential.

Almost the whole pacific region is under Tsunami Warnings, including Hawaii, Californian coast and Washington coast are under advisory / watch.

Tsunami can mean multiple waves, it's not just 1 wave, they grow bigger but slow down when they reach shallow water(coast lines), other than that it'll stay at constant speed, we won't know if the wave will hit Hawaii until 5 PM EST.

Remember the first Tsunami wave is not always the biggest one, and the waves happen in multiples. Australia's east coast is also under a Tsunami warning, so's Japan and like 20+ other regions/countries...

Can keep track of the aftershocks here(and learn about the main one there too): http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquak...quakes_all.php

Japan also had a 7.0 yesterday 22 kilometers below the surface. So many shallow and intense earthquakes man, within first two months of year.

Yeah some channels were saying 45-90 seconds (less than min - 1 min and a half) now they're saying 180 seconds (3 mins), so much conflicting information.

Was watching the news here yesterday, apparently there was an earthquake off the coast of Okinawa. Tsunami warnings followed but there have been none luckily.

There was another thread made on this a few hours ago, how did this end up being the main one? OP can't even spell a 5 letter country.

On topic: I'm hoping since it was 200+ miles off the coast, this means there will be low casualties? Assuming the Tsunami doesn't do more damage than the quake that is...

Elliot Yamin (American Idol dude) says he felt the quake for 3 minutes, as he was running down a big building (6 floors or so).

Yeah people said they felt the Jersy one cause it was so close to the surface (5 kilometers). There was also a 3.0+ one in Chicago a couple weeks ago too, but USGS not listing it anymore though, people also felt that one.

The deeper it is though the less you feel it, like the China Russia quake that happend last week, no one really felt it even though it was 6.7 magnitude, cause it was 335 kilometers deep.

Initial damages don't look to be as severe as I expected, but the Tsunami is yet to hit and aftershocks are far from over. There really isn't very much info on the full extent of damages and death.

A lot of the meteorologist are saying a lot of the area's under "Tsunami Warnings" (practically most of the Pacific Basin) will experience violent Tsunamis. There's reported that some island got a 35 -40 ft wave, yes earthquakes of this magnitude can generate multiple tsunamis, and they don't reach land for hours, Hawaii won't be hit til like 5 PM EST (11 AM HST their time).

The quake itself doesn't seem to have violently affected Chile since the epicenter was 200 kilometers off shore, but still unknown how many are dead/injured/trapped. A 15 floor building collapsed and resulted in only 3 floors remaining. In Haiti since the epicenter was on land in Port Au Prince, the tremors were violent to extreme. In Chile's case the tremors were only strong to very strong to severe.

    Here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercalli_intensity_scale

Edit: Actually it's not the same chart, but anyways, I saw it on TV like this

    Extreme
    Violent
    Severe
    Very Strong
    Strong
