A typical wind wave is traveling at 20~30 mph tops, and displaces several tons of water.

A tsunami is traveling at 500~ mph before reaching shallower waters, and displaces hundreds of tons of water or more.

Well Chile is far more wealthy than Haiti is. They have the necessary funds to rebuild, mostly on their on their own. They'll get help probably, but they don't need it to survive.

Besides I wouldn't donate to the Red Cross anyway for anything. The money never gets theres, or takes months when they need it yesterday.

Triple spoiler counterplay since you triggered my trap card: Hawaii had almost half a day of warning, and I'm not sure exactly what the wavelength of this particular tsunami was, but know enough to say it isn't the same as your typical 6' surfable wave which breaks and recedes immediately.

A tsunami will rush inland further, but how much further depends on everything from the angle of the shoreline relative to the origin of the wave/path it took to get there, the water temperature, the topography of the shoreline, how much energy it dissipates against the continental shelf, and so forth.

Thank goodness Chilean structures are built so well, more steel between the columns. There was one stupid thing I heard their president say though, "Even if hospitals are damaged, use them." Seriously though, with 80+ aftershocks with a range of 5.1 to 6.9 magnitudes, I wouldn't walk in ANY unstable structure that's damaged...

Keep in mind, the epicenter of Chile's earthquake(8.8 magnitude) was 115 kilometers off shore from Conception, Chile...and 200ish kilometers off shore from Santiago at 35 kilometers below the surface of the Earth.

The epicenter of Haiti's earthquake(7.0 magnitude) was 15 kilometers on land away from Port Au Prince and 13 kilometers below the surface of the earth. If Chile's one was closer to the capital, it would look like 100s of nukes blew up everything. There also wouldn't have been 53 countries/territories affected by the Tsunami warnings either though .

But anyways, it's good to see government and emergency care is functioning immediately after the earthquake. Chile also tells the international community that they don't need any outside help or donations for now, so don't worry about donating, unless they get hit by another GUMBO quake soon again or something. If anything though, I'd expect the Latin American, and Latino Global population to step up and do charity fund raisers this time though.


Update: According to USGS, Chile has experienced 100 aftershocks between 5.1-6.9 magnitudes.

Look. Chile got fucked up by a bad Earthquake. Donate or don't. Help or don't. When a big bad wave hits a place and destroys it and you start hearing about it, feel free to start speculating about the destructive power of waves.

Theorizing just because you know some shit about physics and then being completely wrong about it just makes you a tool - not just any tool, mind you, an ignorant one.
