HTML5 over Flash... I love it.

I welcome you all to try,

    www.youtube.com/html5

I seriously love the near instant load time, especially on youtube, as to traditional flash. The video quality is better in flash, however, I've learn to be forgiven as it is afterall, beta and the load times are a lot better.

The sound quality in html5 is a lot better than flash imo...

I agree, flash is a dead standard as far as I'm concerned, it just doesn't know it yet.

Video quality is probably because they're converting the .flv files and not from source for most the videos, new uploads that go right to h.264 will probably be MUCH higher quality than flash ones in the future.

This. Oh god this. It will have it uses but man I would love to see Flash supplanted for like 90% of what its used for. Youtube working just fine for me in HTML5, haven't really tried too many videos but no noticeable quality loss.

Does seem a bit faster than Flash, especially for HD videos (though I'm on lolDSL so it's still slow) needs to be supported on Firefox! Although I use chrome a little as well.

I'm not sure if Firefox will ever support it (with Youtube) as they've already passed on it due to the licensing of h264. Kinda butt, but it's really great in Chrome because flash lags the fuck out of me, generally, and I can't wait to see that shit go.

They won't have a choice in the future, so they either have to support it, or FF will just die out, OGG is just not up to snuff, and in this case, Google has all the leverage, because it's google content that is the main use of this. Google made a clear power-play, and they're going to win.

Firefox is Open Source though isn't it? Practically no way they would be able to get the cash to pay for the licensing on the Codec, and given the massive amount of FF users alienating them may not be in any big sites best interest.

Then again you could just dedicate one of the supported browsers for Youtube browsing, or just use the "old" Youtube.

Disappointed that Opera doesn't support it for the same reasons as FF.

Flash will still be here for a long time due to browser compatibility. Will take at least three revisions of IE that all support HTML5 with the popular video/audio codecs before people could safely use it without a Flash fallback.

Honestly, I hope Firefox gets h264 some way or another, as Flash is fucking slow for anything larger than a 640x480 window.

Go play some Torus, rendered on an HTML5 canvas - http://www.benjoffe.com/code/games/torus/

Look how smooth that shit runs, even when fullscreened.

Would be nice if there was a way of using Flash but hooking it up to an HTML5 canvas instead for rendering. People will still use Flash for games and what not due to smaller filesize thanks to vector graphics, and having everything packed into the one file.
(I can't recall if you can unpack files using javascript)

Videos/Pages on youtube are loading much faster.

Edit: Scratch that - Theres like 3 second load and no buffer at all. The whole video is available after that (tested on 360p and 480p videos). This is great. :D

Doubt Mozilla will, unless they decide to back down from this, that, and some extra stuff.

Not that it matters to me, I've been using Minefield for a while now so if I want to view Flash content I load up Chrome. And if I'm going to use Chrome for Flash anyway, using it for videos is just the next step.

Mac users: Snow leopard + safari + clicktoflash addon = win. Enjoy your (fully) hardware accelerated HD video play back with absolutely zero lag.

As much as I'm rooting for HTML5. You're all delusional if you think Flash is a dead format in the foreseeable future. Think about it, IE6 (The most horrible junk of a browser) still controls around 10-13% of the market and is supported by most major sites.

Hell, Youtube is just now announcing that it'll cut off IE6 support and it took all of 9 years to do so. All that means is that even if HTML5 is released today in full working order and every company releases a new HTML5 compatible browser. It will still take another 6-8 years before Flash dies. Not to mention that HTML5 still can't handle complex animation and games like Flash.

I think you're much more likely to see flash revised and changed to reflect new software and hardware changes over the years, than just die out.
