I am pretty sure that EVERYTHING in this game save AV/PW and possibly Odin (but even that meh) can be done fairly reliably with 15 people. Problem is, gear or not, people are lazy, their attention spans are short (afk half of dynamis amirite?) and in a large group each individual will give less overall because of mob mentality - they feel they're blending into the crowd and don't need to exert as much effort as if they were killing a mob with less people.

As Thorny pointed out, elite gear's main function is to give recognition to those who exert the effort to get it rather than to make or break a fight. Do people who exert less effort overall deserve better rewards and recognition in the game? If this is how things worked in reality, fuck, I'd quit my job and sleep all day.
Sure most if not all (-AV/PW/O) can be done with 15. We are talking about zerging him down for a 100% sure win in under 1 minute. You need to be bit lucky to do so too. And yes you do need pretty good and expensive gear to do so, you can be as not lazy as you want, without that gear, there is no Kirin zerg with 15 in 45s.

As for lazy, not all people are lazy. Some put a lot of effort into game and event ,and still suck for instance on playing mage job. Not because of being lazy, but because they are simply not fast enough, play on PS2 (yes using PC is better to play for me) or what not.

A person could put a lot of effort into game, but isn´t playing perfect because of for instance being old, having slow reaction ect. People seeing this effort are the smart ones and decide that this person deserves gear xyz. Of course people not putting effort don´t deserve the best. And nothing else will happen with this update. Those putting in effort will get the possible new Level 99 gear, those who don´t will now get the possibly outdated gear. Voila.

I think that there is going to be a SERIOUS lack of endgame tanks when all this rolls around. Who's going to take an Aegis Pld in a 74+ party for 24 long-ass levels when the reality is that no-one needs a tank once you have 3-4 melees all with Ni. I think it will be Astral burn Paladins with gimped sword & shield skill or level sync only for all the Plds. Mine included.

The early risers will be TP burn jobs no doubt.

There is something called XPing with friends or not 100% effective parties, just like all new tanks level up. Last but not least you can endless chain easily on PLD too, I have dont it and my PLD is gimp!

Remember the dark ages of FFXI? Pre-TOAU? Back then, who would have expected Colibri would have shaken up the bread and butter Crabs + Beetle-mania? No one.

New zones could mean new mobs that act and reward different to what we have now. Perhaps the new trend of EXP will shift and you'll need a tank. The only reason why you don't now (arguable, PUG groups fail bounce-tanking) is because Colibri/Mamool Ja allow it.

Either way, the average party is going to want a tank and that means guess what? Tanks will be hitting the cap faster than your clusterfuck of DDs.

I think most of the Lv75 gear players have now will be on at least near-equal footing with whatever the Lv~99 equipment will be. If you look back through the game's levels from about 40 to 75, you start to see amounts that don't change.

Accuracy rings for melee stay basically the same from 40+. You can spring for a +1 sniper's or a toreador's at 55 but other than that, they don't scale like Ranged rings do. STR Rings progress every what, 20ish levels? We're likely to see NQ+5 HQ+6 stat rings, maybe +7 at 99 24 levels higher perhaps, but that's not leaps and bounds over the +5's we have now.

Haubergeon I think is one of the best examples. From 59 to 75, even then HQ is better than 90% of the other equipment any DD that can equip it can wear in most situations. Hauberk at 69, 10 levels later, has the same + stats with less - stats, so it basically doesn't scale at all. Ebody being the only real progression, its a pretty substantial leap above the haubergeon, and I think we're not likely to see much beyond that level of stats. If anything, I believe the average stats on a Lv99 melee piece might be comparable to Ebody just judging from the stat progression in the game.

And this is all before the fact that you can probably upgrade gear like Hauberk line etc. So, I'm not really worried too much about gear progression as a whole.

Yupppp, without a doubt. This is a brand new game now. Endless options with main/sub jobs. I don't know how veterns will think now, but who cares. If you truly love this game you'll stick around to find out HOW it will affect you.
From a marketing point of view, I think this is a very strong and bold and very ballsy move by SE. I gotta hand it to them.

I haven't played seriously in over a year since the game got dull (and I was renovating my house). I'm sure I'm not the first (or thousandth) to say that.

IMO, Level 99 coupled with the gear enhancement quests is probably the smartest move they could make business-wise.

I'm not sure on their plan for providing exp grinding grounds yet (that remains to be seen). But, what does FFXI lack that most other games have? The ability to do most of the game's content with a small group. Its easy-mode. Imagine taking down NMs with a duo? You'd just be walking by Tiamat and a pair of players are killing it.

I think that if they don't cap certain storyline BCs @ 75, the game will actually maintain a reasonable playerbase for a few more years. I might actually come back just to finish certain storylines that I could not before since finding 5 other people to do some BC is like pulling teeth. Players will spend time getting to 99 and building up their enhanced gear for years. They need to add only minimal content while they put most of their efforts into FFXIV.

Game developers don't want hardcore players (sorry). They want subscribers that pay to play since the game is enjoyable. FFXI isn't enjoyable anymore for many people.

I think we see Refreshga at 80-82ish and/or Refresh II around 83-85. At which point, I could give a flying fig if they can cast Refresh I. I'll still do it better, and Convert will likely get the gimp version for /RDM.

I mean, we're going to be stuck refilling huge MP pools at this point, our own included.

I wouldn't be shocked to see our meritable spells becoming standard and the merit points just "boosters" instead, with III or even IV versions showing and the L99 merit system applying to those.

T4 nukes for RDM's...but does that mean T5 to go with Comet/Meteor for BLM's? Scholars?

The mind wobbles. I'm going to just hope my favorites come out well as they start raising the bar.

The people I think that are going to have it interesting are RNG and COR. New, more expensive ammo for those 76+ level guns? Almost certain.

Dunno if I can handle another massive level-bingefest to what will be 99 from 37ish, though RDM from 75 and COR from 70 are definitely on the list. Plus, of course knocking a lot of jobs up to 50- WHM, BLM, SCH, RNG, NIN...

I was thinking more Maat's left testicle if you grind everything to 99 - would be a feat worthy of it with that many flipping colibri.

I can't be bothered with the task of reading 21 pages so I won't.

In terms of programming, would it be difficult to scale a non-instanced mob? For example, if an alliance in Dragon's Aery had a Lv 99 player in it, would it be possible to scale based on claim? I was thinking that with the new Fomor NMs "Levelling Up" during the fight, that maybe all the current NMs/HNMs that we fight will do the same depending on the highest level in the party. (Ex: if there's a lv 99 in the alliance, the mob will level up to 115 instantly or over the course of the fight. And depending on the HNM, it will level XX amount of levels over the highest member (post-75))

Pretty sure other FFs have had mob levels scale based on your levels so I'm guessing the precedent is there - but would probably require more work than SE would like to put in at a guess. I reckon they'll 75 cap certain stuff like Dynamis/Limbus etc and leave it as a mid-level endgame or something like that. Quite what they'd do with the Aery I don't know - I don't think SE have ever known quite what to do with the ground HNMs to be honest and just keep praying they'll go away.

/cor would actually be good for any job that can use a gun (maybe any ranged if QD will work with it) Rdm/Cor with a Failnaught/PPA would be pretty sweet imo.
