1. Obviously the game has reduced in population greatly- they are finally merging servers. As fewer people play, the days of shells of 24+ will whither away as well (pretty much already has, or at least greatly diminished since release of ToAU). So they raise the level cap so a party of 6 can have the same difficulty fight against Nidhogg as an 18 man alliance did @75. Or this makes PW beatable by a single ally. Hell, even 6 man ultima/omega. And dare I say enough stats to bring Meteor down to a manageable level from AV?
Hell, don't ask SE to fix it- just give each character in Vana'diel a nice shot of HGH and then throw 'em against their precious AV. All these things to compensate for lower population.
2. We've been begging for them to make Kings content obsolete by releasing not just duplicate places to get the gear (Einherjar) but by releasing better gear. This is the way to do it.
The casual player will have run of the "old" HNMs as the serious player will move on to more difficult content that requires the newer level cap, abilities, and stats. I anticipate the 3 addons will be pretty much ridiculous in terms of overpowering stats. Again, their love for their creations has held them back- remember the "fear" of HNMs that was mentioned not long ago? God forbid they release a lv75 piece of gear above their precious Ebody and Mbody(lulz); just release level 99 gear!
Just some thoughts. All in all though, I am starting to think this increased level cap will keep me playing for some time. If nothing else it reduces the scale of cooperation needed to succeed in the game, which in my opinion becomes more and more important every day in FFXI.
