This, along with the FFXIV beta exclusivity for active FFXI subscribers, once again shows that SE is and always will be a sales/production-oriented firm. No regard for customer service/value.

I wonder how this will affect merits? If the current areas arent lvl capped to 75 then merits in stuff like Protectra V & Shellra V, AM II etc. could be superceded by higher tiers that those jobs get somewhere between 76 & 99.

It could mean completely new optimum distribution of merits for some jobs.

I bet if you put merits into something that ends up being just a regular unmerited spell that they don't give you back the points to use elsewhere. It would be like when you remove merits, you just lose the point.

Logically speaking, the "core" of RDM will be getting a significant update with this change.

What stares me in the face though is what this is going to do with Ninjas and/or /NIN.
Give NIN San line of spells and finally Jubaku: Ni. /NIN would be same, they already nerfed Utsusemi: Ni, and other spells are only half as effective before resists.

Edit: oh Yonin/Innin nerf by like 25%, then yay DWIII.

Don't jump the gun about gear becoming obsolete. In certain instances there will be better or more oprtions, but SE has a pretty good track record of horizontal upgrades and considering the impact on old armor.

Case in point, Byakko's Haidate is still the shit for most jobs, Seiryu's Kote for ranger, how long has speed belt been the best even AV's belt has the same haste percentage, etc, etc.

Then again the argument could be that SE has always been cautious about releasing better gear for fear of overpowering characters; If the level 99 cap is a straight scale up (combat skill points, etc) then the rules for avoiding over-powering a 75 character will not apply and we could see a regular belt with haste +10 etc.

Just depends on their plans I guess. The hope is it has been at least partially thought out by development.

I'm not thrilled... the thought of whatever they're going to put us through for Genkai 6-whatever, while being up against the entire server for mobs if they're required for the quests... on freshly merged servers so the population back up through the roof - then to have to fight for an exp invite to get from 75-99 (with the way people are - good luck unless you're SAM BRD RDM - although that job's prolly dead or COR - rest of us will rot away in campaign).

It's my idea of fucking hell to be honest - what's fresh about grinding another bajillion collibri at this point in the game?

I won't mind, though. Exping with LS mates in obscure camps will be better than grabbing five fuckoffs who've spent fifty levels killing birds.

The whole crowded camp thing would be solved by just adding an instanced zone that scales to your level where you can still get 30k+/hr exp.... oh wait

Wow, I've not been playing since November, but this could be enough to pull me back. Depends on the release schedule of 14 really.

This'll either be the best or worst thing they could have possibly done for this game.

#1 thing they need to do: selectively protect some gear from getting completely obsolete. Obviously they already thought of relics/mythics, as they mentioned it specifically. But I think this needs to be fairly broad in scope. I think we'd rather see no real new gear, and simply a bigger level cap, than see pretty much everything we've got become shit over night.
#2 thing: selectively level cap or adjust mob difficulty. I don't think anyone cares too much about solo Fafnir, as silly as that concept is. They were already a joke and the real game is claiming. But none of this overpowered... all of our endgame up until now is a joke and requires no skill to beat.

Honestly we have a wealth of great endgame that people enjoy doing right now. Level sync was a great invention. If they don't keep some level caps, we're pretty much fucked. As I highly doubt they'll be able to release enough new endgame to keep us as occupied as we are now.

Jesus, people really likes to bitch. Either its always the same shit or too big change.

I'm really happy they have this much content coming, and not only 2-3 new mobs but big changes and stuff.

Can I just point out that the screenshots provided by SE of WHM using convert and PUP using chiblast are in the past.

Perhaps a clue that not all areas will be effected by lv99?

Also, if I need to pay £10 for each of these new mini expansions....

I think you guys are missing the fuller ramifications here. It will now take TWO days instead of one for JP to hit the maximum level cap if any new jobs are ever released.

Yes, it depends on if we assume the exp system will follow the same linear scale it always has. Since this is a radical move to uncap to 99, they may make adjustments to the exp system to handle it. I can't see 44k+ per level for 24 levels, which enough new monsters to handle the VT-IT range from 75 to 99, just don't see that happening.

As for events becoming too easy, most events have been too easy for a long time now, not just because player power has increased but because player practice and knowledge has also increased. There are tried and true strategies for every event there is, which is not a bad thing, you follow it and you win. But you won't find many battles where your link shell or alliance is constantly adapting to the battle in real time like the first Vrtras and BV2s because no one knows what to expect. The new content will bring all this back for a short time. To me it also just means smaller groups can do more with less people, which being a member of a small group, I personally like the idea.

You do, so you either get em and love em/hate or say you won't get but end up buying it anyway. :D

Yeah wouldn't expect to get merit points back but it could mean some merit choices become useless and are replaced by new meritable abilities/spells in the long term.

A lot of people bitching should just quit, for you never enjoyed FFXI for good a while now. >.>

This is like "The Last Hurrah" for FFXI anyways; many people that I see posting in this thread have already signed themselves over to FFXIV. Why not enjoy an explosion of updates no one even thought of happening? I know maybe like 0-3 people on the entire BG forums saw the level 99 cap coming (or any lvl cap increase for that matter).

    MMO Gamers these days.

This is clearly an experiment. Level cap increases is something World of Warcraft has been doing with consistency since early 2007, meanwhile reaching subscriber populations in the tens of millions. Final Fantasy XI, on the other hand, hasn't raised the level cap in nearly seven years. Square-Enix, as a developer, has two choices in which to proceed with Final Fantasy XIV in the subsequent years after its release. Though the game won't have levels or experience points, it's clear that some method of grinding will exist, and thus caps will exist. SE has the choice to either present the game with sidegrades for years on end, like FFXI and the never ending relevance of sky and kings, or like WoW, replacing old content with each new level cap.

This is an experiment to visit increased level caps again, only six years after which they established an endgame full of situational gear and sidegrades. I can't say I'm omnipotent enough to know exactly what the experiment is (is it how to keep old content relevant while subsequently expanding the game and levels or is it how players will react to their work being diminished?), nor am I confident enough to say that this is merely an experiment for the sake of their next big MMO. This was their first MMO, after all, and experimentation is part of the game for any developer finding their place within a genre - especially one so grandiose as MMORPGs. It is clear, however, that this is an ideal time for an experiment such as this with two Final Fantasy MMOs soon to be in the same perpetual marketplace.

What's also clear is that forums are going to be filled with meaningless conjecture for the next three to four months.
