And does anybody know how long alpha stages typically last before beta tests begin?

alpha tests tend to be somewhat short from past experience 1-3 months at most, beta is like 2-5 months.

of course.. it differs by company! (Like Ragnarok online had a 1-2 year beta, while Earth and beyond beta lasted about 2 months)

They said the Alpha stage will last as long as it needs to depending on our feedback during testing (e.g actually submitting bug reports)

I'm gutted, been playing 5+ years since EU release, never suspended my account, got token and still not in alpha. Only made 1 beta application and that was within hours of signup site going live.

This kind of sucks. I was online and applied within one hour of when the beta signups started. I've got a maxed out PC with a quad core processor, been playing FFXI since just after NA launch, have no violations on my account, yet no luck. It would seem as though they let a large number of people into Alpha. I'm very disappointed, been waiting a long time for this and my application seemed absolutely perfect (put stuff on it like able to play at any times, for over 9000 hours a week, etc) I also still have my FFXI account live and play daily.

I wonder just how many people they chose for the alpha test, and what criteria they used on selecting or not selecting people.

Beta is played from your home, is it not? Couldn't SE just match your IP and look up your name?

that's usually how it goes sometimes, and sometimes its the people with bad systems to see how their software works on it. They don't just want the best, they want to test the entire spectrum of hardware.
