They're either going to have to stack shitloads of stats in single gear pieces, somehow let us fuse stats from different gear together (or continuously customize it to improve it repeatedly, like what they seem to want to do with the Magians stuff) or do what WoW does and keep making older gear useless all the time. Without situational gear, it's a lot harder to have any interest in sidegrades; which means you'd spend a lot less time getting gear for any one particular class.
I wonder what they're planning to do about that.
I won't miss having to carry around 8 gearsets, what I will miss is being able to customize the way I'm using my abilities/spells.
For instance, gearpieces with "enhances xxx ability" were fun to me. Same thing for being able to decide whether you want your nuke to do extra damage, or have it land with extra accuracy.
Having so many sidegrades, or specific gearpieces helped me a lot with my motivation to get gear, since it had more depth than just going for the armor with the highest stats. Like I said though, I did not enjoy carrying 8 sets and running around at 76/80. Just the customization it offered.
I'd love a system like what we have in XI, but without the inventory constraints. What if you could extract the effects from armor and "equip" them to spells?
Example: select phalanx, a menu comes up, and you can add all of your "enhancing skill+" effects that you gathered from armor to Phalanx. This is basically what we do with spellcast, but without using items.
Then again, what you guys might not like is having to go after so much gear, rather than having problems with just carrying it.
The thing is, the issue with having to carry around all the gear is just a constraint from FFXI (lolPS2, etc). It can really be made to work with higher inventory space, and the ability to define gearsets you can get from secondary storage automatically on class change. But once again, PS2 limitations ftl.
edit: And more macro space too! I would say the problem is not in the mechanic itself, but rather its implementation.
So
Does battle music play when you pull out your weapon? Whats the song that plays? Also whats the death theme? Any chance you can party up and it will change?
It could, alternatively, but a uniquely alpha restraint.
Got one-shotted by a monster called Birdtrap, then again by a Hyena that aggro'd me, was quite funny. It's weird seeing the battle-related actions of everyone in the zone even though none of them are in visual range.
I hope they at least somewhat fix some stability issues before NA beta, sounds like the EU one is going way worse than the JP one did. although we can't exactly say for sure since we couldn't hear their QQ's =x
Only 30mins left, hope someone got something!
Still unable to get in at all.
I wouldn't be surprised to hear that they sent out more and more invites for those in each group.
A small-middling amount for Japan, as judged by stable servers and low lag.
Middling-large amount for Europe, as judge by the servers kinda running kinda not.
Large-huge amount for NA, as will be shown by complete server failure (potentially).
I'm interested if anyone found any bugs yet, hoping it was just very smooth and bug free for everything everyone got to interact with. Servers being unstable is a given, hopefully Square Enix will make an extreme overhaul of the problems of people continuously being booted from the server for the next part of the alpha test.
