Non-FFXI players are their real target, and they don't want them scared away by boring level 1 fights against buggy rats.
Wrong. SEs already stated in an interview (I'll look up the link later) that current and former XI players are their primary targets, then other people from all walks of life.

You do realize why SE has given preference to loyal XI fans, right?

Off topic, I didn't see this mentioned but I'm not dry humping this thread like I was yesterday... exp loss on death? Anyone?

I agree with QP that it's the non XI players they need to worry about... the same people spamming the most random crap during the stream yesterday, etc. etc. People who WANT to find any little reason to hate it Vs. most of us who are looking for every reason to love it.

I think it works like it did in FFXI. At least the manual says that there's special colors for unclaimed/claimed monsters. I don't really remember from the stream though.

Anyway, why is no one talking about the Arcanist's and Armorer's Guilds that were on the map? Those are probably two unannounced mage/crafting classes. Someone earlier said they saw a Muskateer's Guild too I think?

Were there guilds for the already announced classes too, like ex. Conjurer's guild? If so, you might be on to something.

Hopefully not, but with large portions of the core progression system missing (if stat point distributions is really that big of a deal) then all we can do is wait.

Most people last night weren't even doing guildleves, just running around hitting stuff and fixing bugs. I wouldn't really start this sort of complaint until the actual tutorial systems are in place and it's relatively bug-free and it's closer to what retail will be, say, first phase beta. You're not really helping the dev team by going to them and saying, 'man, levels 1-2 were so slow because I kept on running into bugs! This better change for the final release!'

I didn't explore because I kept crashing randomly and didn't have much time on the game. So instead of figuring out why I was crashing so much in town I quickly gtfoed and managed to stay on longer outside in the field.

I saw Marauder's, Fisherman's, and Blacksmith's as well. Actually I'm not even sure if Fisherman was announced? It's just something that I expected.

True, after the first 5-10 levels in WoW, it was easy to see where the character progression part of the game was going. But much of the more interactive and engaging things didn't happen until the mid-high levels.

Yeah, I don't think high numbers is what we should be expecting at the start. I mean, look how long it took SE to get to level 99

I'm sure some people already have, but really, what more can you expect for your first tutorial style battle?

Ahah, I knew that when somebody found something called ARC or something similar in the datamine that it had to be an Arcanist.

It's either a new class, or a little more likely, an alternate name for Alchemist or some other crafter. I'd love another mage class to add to the mix though.

well, considering every screen is saw from yesterday had a gun in it, and archer != somebody who uses a gun, yes Musketeer is probably going to happen.

Also there isn't any class announced yet in charge of the buff/debuff department.

Come to think of it now, as has been stated, naming actual classes for using these weapons is pretty stupid.

They should have been like, "Differen't types of weapons available: Sword, hand-to-hand, bow ...etc"
"Sword abilities: one, two three ...etc." i think

i think that would have been a little more straightforward than giving these classes names and such.

Hasn't been announced I think...but it has been implied. On the official site, they have that little story bit on how a person changes classes. It's the one with Leeroy and how it says after their party disbands, he suddenly has the urge to fish. "The gladiator and thaumaturge are gone now, and all that remains is Leeroy the Fishermen!"

I don't have the energy to read the last 40 pages.

Can someone please summarise the main points? Biggest leaks?

That's what the Japanese naming convention is. Sword-user, Bow-user, etc. Sounds rather dull, directly translated to english, so I can understand the need to add some flair.

It certainly could sound like a new mage class, considering how neutral the naming system is for the other DoM classes. "Arcanist" could mean pretty much anything, like Conjurer and Thaumaturge.

So how exactly is the mouse utilized? Is it pretty useless like it was in XI? Or can you use it for, say, camera control? Targetting?
I hardly touched the mouse at all, it was slow, and I had a controller.

I used it to drag the chat windows around, trying to move the camera with it was slow as hell.

That is the entire problem of this. For those of you who think that drawing parallels from FFXI to FFXIV is stupid considering the amount of information we have received and the amount of game play we have been given, please consider that the same is true of the opposite. The fact that quite a few players even consider FFXIV to resemble FFXI should be enough to indicate that more than "people are overreacting to alpha content".

As far as the NDA goes, it's purpose is more to protect intellectual property than opinions of hardcore fanatics showing their friends how alpha the alpha content is. Even if SE had the exact intent of their particular NDA to prevent said fanatics' opinions, it just further shows that we should be worried how some of this alpha content even made it into the alpha.

If playing FFXI through all of its bullshit didn't clue you in, then SE won't have any problems getting you and your friends to play FFXIV.

I know an absolute horde of marketing students that would beg to differ. It is, of course, to protect intellectual property, but the latter is just as important to them when trying to sell a product, and an NDA serves both purposes.

What you're doing is basically judging an alpha so raw that most people couldn't even stay logged in for more than 20 minutes at a time.

I didn't see this mentioned but I'm not dry humping this thread like I was yesterday... exp loss on death? Anyone?
As far as I could tell, no. This is the alpha though, I'm assuming that come beta, armor durability will take a hit in addition to the raise sickness.
