Is this a hint at item customisation I spy?
You can use different colored synth materials to make the same item in various colors, I posted this info few hours before the EU alpha began. It's not the same static colors either, each item has it's own specific set of colors and each one has an X amount of various colors. I also confirmed 1 crafting class from ffxi that will be in the ffxiv (which is pointless because the directory structure tells you which crafts will be in the game).

So you can actually change colors for armor..... FINALLY!!!

For me it would be putting up with endgame BS again or leveling another job then losing interest in about 1-3 weeks. I got everything but PUP/DNC/SCH to 66+ so I know my time wouldn't be worth it since I'd get to 75 on something then disappear again.

I need to start reading up on Visual Basic 2008 again.

Cool. Anything else about how materials effect synths? e.g some sort of optional catalyst for x effect or whatever

You don't need authorization to download even on the original client from what my friend told me.

I was given the client install from a friend and you don't need any type of authorization to install or launch it

I think what they mean is if you used a different material for a piece of armor if it'd give you a special effect as well as the looks.

I only found a few item names but can't see the stats or effects so I can't confirm it. Whenever someone releases a dat viewer for ffxiv I'm sure that will answer your question

I wouldn't expect crap from the beta for that kind of stuff TBH.

So for instance, for Glady you chose STR 70 INT 30 VIT 60 etc. and thats the stats you retain and build upon while you're equipped with swords and boards. But when you switch weapons to become CON you change to a different saved stat set like STR 16 INT 90 VIT 40 yada yada. That way you truly are a completely different role every time you switch instead of being a great Glady but gimped CON etc.
This is what I'd envision. SE has been going on about this "just equip whatever you want to" for way too long to have set stats that you have to visit a city to change. If the whole concept is just to be able to change your weapon at will, what good would it do you if you just pick up your "trusty" lance and all of a sudden have 15 str and 12 dex?

Fun for me is in end game events really. I already have a good majority of the things I was after through my playtime so now I just help others get that stuff. Sky, sea, dyna all that junk.

They said that hp/mp figures arent set and they are the same for all races/classes/lv's/ect.. This will be the case until at least Beta2

Yes I really hope they don't expect the player to keep respeccing, that was so annoying in WoW before dual specs came in. And even changing between specs is annoying compared to just job switching in 11 where it's all done automatically.

But in the alpha manual the question was asked if you can reallocate your stat points, and the answer was no. That's where the confusion comes from.

It said that you can't change them, for now, with a pretty clear implication you'd be able to do so later.

I'm still having trouble -not- seeing this as a problem for people who wanted to play all jobs on one character, but we don't know enough about the system to be able to tell one way or the other yet. I'm thinking there could easily be diminishing returns on the stats, so that the greatest amount of effort goes into going from "decent" or "good" magic or physical stats to "great!", and decent/good is easy to get to, relatively.

This also kind of calls to mind where they said mages would have to specialise in one or another particular element to be best with, if anyone remembers that! Which is pretty interesting.

Did anyone partake in the alpha using a gamepad? Did it use the same awful D-pad targeting system FFXI does?

How was targeting in general? could you freely switch targets in combat, or did you have to go through a horribly implemented "switch target" system like in FFXI?
