How do we always end up back at discussing jumping? I mean I'd love to jump as much as the next person, but I think the subject has been beat to death around here.

Beta phase 2 will also be when they'll start implementing changes they thought up of from the alpha comments. That means quite a bit of down time, quick patches, random restarts etc... Definitely not a good way to go with open beta.

You were always able to fall off edges in FFXI , it's just you can't climb up a tiny step...

??? I never said, nor did SE in their interview ever say that Beta 2 = open.

FF:XI was heavily influenced by the pokemon gameboy games. Didn't you know?

FFXI has less chaff in the way it tests "skill" compared to WoW. I think the original statement pertained only to that fact. (What you call "guided" learning curve is more like fucking up the learning curve so it is impossible to read. Arcade shooters with second loops and shit, that is a "guided learning curve" if anything...) Whether WoW still required more skill is something you guys can fuck around with. Too bad not a single person in this thread seems understand how to measure a game's skill requirement. Ya'll just going to throw around battle gimmicks and yell out random boss/instance names.

I find it to be a nigh-impossible endeavor for MMORPGs. These games challenges are fucked up to fit 10+ people. One player can be a retarded bot spamming "DOTS", another player can be a tactical mastermind basically playing several like the former in a fashion similar to a Zergling.

I don't want to see jumping, but something like FFXIII had to climb up small drops would be perfect.

Regardless of battle gimmicks, WoW endgame doesn't require each class to do pretty much the exact same thing for every single boss. The variety, in my opinion, is what FF11 lacks in terms of measuring game-playing "skills."

For example, I can say I'm a skilled cook when I can make a hamburger. However, if I can also make a pizza, then I'm a more skilled cook. Geddit?

Wouldn't really work because people would still bitch as ledges would have to be limited to taru size while meanwhile realistically all the other classes could get up ledges quite a bit higher

So there's like a standard indexing method for that now?

It is really quite simple, you know:

The distance between the best players and the worst players(or really, "medium" players).

Oh, yeah more or less I guess. Though a competitive field can have depth just because alot of people are in it (or lack it because not many people are in it).

Not really. You are ignoring what I just wrote! If a simple game has a lot of players what you end up having is a large group of indistinguishable players standing at the top. What you can only say is that the depth of unpopular games might go undiscovered. Usually what happens if that the depth is found, but only appreciated by few and no one cares to listen because they are busy playing WoW and Guitar Hero.

Bigger samples means more freakish outliers, but the average "elite" player (bit of an oxymoron) is still close to the average scrub in that example so you're essentially correct.

It uh, it doesn't? Guess I've been playing my mage all wrong then.

Not saying WoW doesn't have more variety in boss patterns, but let's not kid ourselves here.

Why is this being discussed in the alpha thread, again. Shit has nothing to do with alpha info, or even speculation.
