SE have said that they aim to limit populations to around 6000 concurrent users, similar to FFXI.

I'm aware of that interview, but AFAIK, thats the first time they have ever indicated a timing for the PS3 beta beyond "after the PC beta starts", my question was:

What makes you say it was pushed back?

In Japan 11 came out ten months after 10. The teams on 11/14 seem entirely separate from the others and they've probably been tinkering on 14 for years already.

Based on the number of people who have downloaded the alpha client (2700~) I would estimate maybe 2000-2500 are actual alpha testers...

Ok so 14 will come out 10 months after 13. The game should be out on 13/12/2010

Considering someone I know who got an invite during the last round of invites was tester number 1800ish I'd say about 2000 is pretty close.

IIRC, there's about 2000-2500 people on the alpha forums for NA region, though I don't think all of them were able to log in for the first alpha test.

By retail, I'm assuming at least 4000 people online at once per server (even more total), since FFXI can handle that. So far, probably only about a quarter of that has been online at once in alpha, though.

EDIT: Looks like I was beaten with the number estimates, but at least it looks like 2000-2500ish is a consensus.

A relatively new server type should be able to house double that amount. The problems we're seeing now isn't because the server can't house that many people, it's because of the stress that's occurring at specific points.

All the testers are hammering the servers to just log in. Then they're all starting in the same area. Congestion is part of the start up process of any MMO.

Considering the fact that the last test would have been the first mass international login for their server SE would likely have the server population cap set much lower than usual, maybe only 1000 concurrent users?

Hopefully they have upped that a bit and more people can get on this time.

Thats a really bad assumption. And in Japan 13 came out last year, so it technically wont be 2010 for 2 installments this year (for japan)

But there are 2 different development teams and they dont depend on each other. Im praying for a 2010 release, 2011 is too far away.
