By the way, think my laptop's GeForce 8700M GT with 256MB dedicated video memory (1535 MB total available graphics memory) will cut it? The "GeForce 8800 or higher" scares me.

P2P & UPnP
One of the methods used to distribute FINAL FANTASY XIV Alpha Version updates is via a peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing system. In the event of an update, the version update program will look to see if your PC’s UPnP settings are enabled. If they are, the program will automatically open a port and connect your PC with other testers’ PCs also downloading the version update, accelerating the download process.

Please Note:
- The version update program’s P2P functionality only allows for the uploading/downloading of Alpha Version updates. No other data will be transferred.
- The version update program will not work in tandem with any other third-party P2P software.
- Players using PCs or network peripherals that do not have UPnP capabilities can download the version update via the standard version update servers or directly from another tester’s PC.
- If you do not wish to allow the automatic opening of ports via UPnP, please disable UPnP in your router or OS settings. If your PC is using a global IP address or you have set up a static port on your router, you will not need to adjust your UPnP settings.
- While UPnP availability may differ depending on PC or network peripheral settings, the availability of P2P file-sharing does not. Rather, it may differ as a result of the individual policies of various Internet Service Providers.

i7 1.6 ghz is about as good as a quad core Q6000, shouldn't be an issue.

i was gonna ask the same question. not sure how quad cores measure up accordingly against dual cores numerically.
tho i'm want to believe that anything that is quad core is already better than a core 2 duo 2.4

Assuming you use the same system and used a Core2Duo, a Core2Quad and then an i7 without changing any other part, you'd hardly see any difference in most games.


Now if you were Jesus and had a SLI of GTX280+ or Xfire of <insert random ATI card>, it would be different because of CPU bottlenecks issues.

edit: I actually havent bought my laptop yet. but its a tossup between 2 different ones..

not sure if i should go whore out on gfx specs (gtx 285 1g vram / i7-720QM) on a local brand or go with another one that I'm more familiar with.

using 2.26 dual core with 4GB of RAM and a Nvidia 9800 with 512MB of VRAM.

I'm getting it this Saturday at Microcenter along with all the other parts.

Case: HAF 932
PSU: 700W whichever is decent and not overpriced.
CPU: i7 930 (Microcenter has 920 at $200 and $930 at 230. lol) w/ H50 pump
Mobo: ASUS P6X58D Premium (Not sure yet, might settle on something cheaper. Thoughts?)
Ram: 6GB DDR 1600
GPU: 9600 GT 512MB (I still have this from old rig. Figured, I'll sit on it till the newer cards come out and drop the price on 5700-5900s. I'm aware its my bottleneck.)
HDD1: Corsair R60 60GB SSD (Win 7 and FFXIV only. Though judging from Specs above: might need to redirect FFXIV to the My Documents folder on the second hard drive. Probably quick registry fix.)
HDD2: WD 1TB 7200RPM

Am I missing something?

Welcome to the FINAL FANTASY XIV Alpha/Beta Test!

As of this week, the development team has finished implementing all necessary features in the Alpha Version, and has moved into the final debug phase. During this phase, we have encountered several issues that are adversely affecting server stability, and are working hard to alleviate the problems. It is for this reason that we have not yet been able to begin distributing the client software, and we ask that testers please wait patiently until the issues can be addressed. In addition, we will soon be posting the minimum PC system requirements for running the Alpha Version client software, in addition to an updated schedule for the testing phases.

Looks like I meet the system requirements except for graphics card (Radeon HD 2600 XT :\) so if those are minimum requirements, SE has me wutting a little because they had us submit system specs on the beta application then choose people who can't run the game? Huh.

It's alpha/beta... They have to pick people on both ends of the spectrum. Also as has been quoted before: SE has said that those specs are higher than they should be for retail.

I figured that much, but assumed if you don't meet minimum requirements = can't run game (ie pointless picking testers that can't test).

Or am I wrong and you can run it, just looks a bit more wanky/doesn't run as smooth?

Also the alpha will be locked to a 1280x720 windowed mode. Hope we can find a registry tweak to fix that =p
