Given that people are fixing this by resetting the internal clock (removing the battery) it's likely that:
a) The issue has nothing to do with PSN (obvious since many people weren't connected online and still had the issue)
b) people who aren't having the problem now would likely have it at some unspecified time in the future (barring an update that fixes this)
There are people with PS3 fats that didn't have the issue, but generally they had either disconnected the battery in the past or sent theirs in for repair (during which the battery was likely replaced).
Really hoping that it'll fix itself when the date rolls over in GMT, but if it's a signed overflow issue or something like that, it may not fix itself automatically for many years. Hopefully Sony will have an easy way to push a patch out despite the lack of PSN connectivity.
For all the people claiming it's a leap year issue (*cough*, hint: it's not a leap year and the PS3 handled 2008's leap year correctly), it's much more likely an integer overflow error similar to the linux 497 days uptime issue.
It most definitely does. My friend can go online on his playstation and use the web browser, but can't get onto PSN. If you haven't encountered this error yet you can still play your games offline, but after encountering it when you try to play your trophy games offline that's when it gets fubar'd.a) The issue has nothing to do with PSN (obvious since many people weren't connected online and still had the issue)
I meant:
The glitch causes an issue with PSN, but PSN isn't causing the glitch.
Since most of us ran into the problem when we got kicked off PSN, the assumption was that it was a network issue, but it's likely that PSN itself is fine and it's the internal clock that's causing things to go out of whack.
The later model fat PS3's are working. I forget which serial number it was but I think it ended in L, which were fine.
Updates are still possible without PSN activity, it's a separate system and people should still be able to receive firmware updates. (For cases such as this, I am guessing)
It's been posted that it is most probably down to the base code used for leap years, seeing as the internal clock uses GMT/UTC and everyone started experiencing the problem at the same time (midnight GMT/UTC) rather than in waves. I posted the theory a page or so back from NeoGAF. Which makes sense. The same thing happened with the Zune, but that corrected itself the next day, so here's to hoping the PS3 does the same thing.
EDIT: To clarify, PSN is fine. Anything that tries to draw the time from the internal clock, even as a check, will not work. This includes DLC (because most downloadable stuff has 'expiry dates', even if they are blank), games which dynamically check the trophies and dates, maybe certain save files? But yeah, shit is fucked for now.
It is March 1st and still all messed up. When will it be march 1st everywhere?
The PS3 thinks it's 29th of Feb, that's the problem (if it is for certain a leap year problem). If it is going to fix itself, it won't do it until 7pm EST tonight as that is midnight GMT/UTC, which will roll over to the next day.
If it doesn't, well hopefully Sony is quick with the firmware update. lol
That is the thing, do we really know that? Yes the net is up but who here does not have auto log in and can say for a fact that the updater is not part of PSN, or in the least makes you be on the PSN network. whatever it is. 99.99% of ps3 users have a PC/usb drive if that is in fact true(that the psn/updater are one in the same) if it is Sony should rethink that now lol
You can't sign into PSN if your system doesn't have the latest firmware, so that goes to say that they are separate.
[EDIT] Damnit, beaten by Shoj.
Should I call home and tell people not to touch my fucking playstation or should I take my chances that noone will be up for the next 3 hours?
Even Netflix doesn't work for me >_<
this sucks, Sony better fix this.
I have a fat PS3 with a 320GB HD I put in. The web browser works but it won't connect to PSN and as of now I only tried Netflix.
I'm hoping that it works itself out later today.
I need to play The Show 10 tomorrow gdi.
figured it would be fixed by now, Sony get ur tech's out there !
There's probably a lot of people with old PS3s who have never hooked it up online wondering exactly what the fuck is going on.
