I read that it is the hardware clock not the OS clock that is bugged, some repair place posted that the problem might self correct after 8pm central time March 1st. If not they also said after that time unplugging the power cord and removing the battery on the motherboard for at least 15 minutes might fix the problem. Only time will tell.

this sucks, Sony better fix this.

I have a fat PS3 with a 320GB HD I put in. The web browser works but it won't connect to PSN and as of now I only tried Netflix.
Netflix should work, took me 3 times to get it up but it did work. Do not need to be on psn it seems to work with netflix.

We’re aware that many of you are having difficulty connecting to the PlayStation Network this evening. Those of you with “slim” PS3s (the 120/250 GB models) appear to be unaffected.

Know that we have narrowed down the issue and have engineers working to restore service even as you read this. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you, and genuinely appreciate your patience while we work to resolve this.

In the meantime, you may want to follow our Twitter account for the latest update

I tried 3 times last night and Netflix would not work, do you have a Slim or a Fat PS3. I got annoyed last night because I was able to use the PS3 browser to go to youtube and watch videos and then I went back to Netflix and it still wouldn't work. Maybe it was just due to Netflix congestion as PS3 users' games stopped working so they all decided to watch something on Netflix instead.

    Is it working right now?

That is to say, a lot of people were playing fine online past the breakdown, and upon restarting PS3s they bugged out. So if you have a 40gb fat that is as of this moment still working properly, then this is becoming more and more interesting.

Reports are that non-trophy games are working, so games like MGS4 are working.

I'm at work so I can't try it until later, but mine's been in for service twice so I may have gotten updated parts that don't have the coding flaw.

I'll bet if Sony doesn't have this fixed within the next couple hours that we won't see a resolution for a few days.

Statement from Sony regarding 8001050F error. Bottom line, if you have a fat PS3, do not use it for 24 hours. The news came in Sony's first comprehensive statement about the error plaguing PS3s worldwide.

As you may be aware, some customers have been unable to connect to the PlayStation Network today. This problem affects the models other than the new slim PS3.

We believe we have identified that this problem is being caused by a bug in the clock functionality incorporated in the system.

    Errors include:
    * The date of the PS3 system may be re-set to Jan 1, 2000.
    * When the user tries to sign-in to the PlayStation Network, the following message appears on the screen; "An error has occurred. You have been signed out of PlayStation Network (8001050F)".
    * When the user tries to launch a game, the following error message appears on the screen and the trophy data may disappear; "Failed to install trophies. Please exit your game."
    * When the user tries to set the time and date of the system via the Internet, the following message appears on the screen; "The current date and time could not be obtained. (8001050F)"
    * Users are not able to playback certain rental video downloaded from the PlayStation Store before the expiration date.

We hope to resolve this problem within the next 24 hours. In the meantime, if you have a model other than the new slim PS3, we advise that you do not use your PS3 system, as doing so may result in errors in some functionality, such as recording obtained trophies, and not being able to restore certain data.

As mentioned above, Please be advised that the new slim PS3 is not affected with this error. We are doing our best to resolve the issue and do apologize for any inconvenience caused.

For the latest status on this situation please check either the PlayStation blog (blog.us.playstation.com) or PlayStation.com.

    >_< thinking about this, if it is a problem with the ARM chip used to do the hardware clock and it doesn't auto correct after 24 hours. I think it will require a firmware update which might take a couple of days to create and people will most likely require a thumb drive to perform the patch.

I hope all the people with Fat PS3s informed enough to know this is a widespread problem and are capable of patching their PS3s.

It may not be entirely Sony's fault if a supplied part is defective.

God I'd hate to be a customer service rep for Sony right now...
