Then your company paid like shit. Manual labor jobs typically pay more than minimum wage...plus don't movers/delivery people in general get tips as well? I thought it was common practice to tip them.
Maybe on a Friday or Saturday night...but slower nights the Mexicans in the back (and trust me I've worked with a bunch of them) are on smoke breaks or sitting around doing nothing still making their wage while the servers are making shit because there's nobody in the place. It balances out. Plus it really does take a certain type of person to deal with people...I know that 9/10 people who work in a kitchen could not deal with customers. Plus cooks make more than minimum wage, which was what originally got me posting.
I used to Valet in Phoenix. I made WAY more money doing that opposed to my serving job now.
And seriously, the type of people I have to deal with at the restaurant....I deserve lots of money.
Movers should get tipped, but they almost never ever do. I know this because it was a radio topic one morning and they brought on a bunch of movers. Most of them get tipped with food and drinks.
With that said, I'd never, ever, ever, ever, ever work in food or retail.
If you are a server/waiter/ress w/e and your wage is bothering you , you should seek another restaurant. I cleared 60k last 3 years in tips, claimed every penny and paid taxes on it all. 30 hr/week job with no student loans ftw. Pity not your waiter and dont forget to set your alarm for 5:30 wage slaves!
This is the truth. If you are working less hard as a waiter than someone doing manual labor then you are working for a shitty slow restaurant. If you have to complain about tips or wages then you are also working at a shitty restaurant. If you are a good waiter at a busy restaurant then you will be making huge money on tips but you will work your ass off. Imagine full speed running around a large building for 6-8 hours or even longer if you are on a swing shift carrying heavy platters of food. The restaurant business is brutal if you work in a very popular place. But if that is the case you rarely need to worry about dickwads who don't tip because you will make a lot of money and you earn it too if you are good.
Smaller restaurants and less busy ones and fast food chains though are not the same and they don't work as hard. Not all jobs are created equal. But it evens out because you typically don't tip at fast food.
I have worked construction (manual labor for a good portion of that) and in the restaurant business and they are both equally hard in their own ways.
lol@servers working harder than manual labor.
Servers don't even know what work is compared to many of the $8-$15/h manual laborers who work factories, machinery, or raw laborers, especially ones without unions, which is most of them.
You make more and do nothing but bitch at how hard it is. Boo hoo.
Just work in california. State minimum wage + tips for waiters.
Quid pro bro.

That Gay Bar sig made me laff.
you do understand that the employer would have to pass whatever they are paying the servers off onto the patrons? so one way or another you would have to pay them with your bill. this way people can give an incentive to the server to kinda give a shit, and in a good restaurant servers do work their asses off.Right, the employer that is expecting the customers to pay their employees isn't the asshole.
in short, if you go out and drop 100$ on dinner and a drinks and cant spare an extra 20 to tip the person bringing it out to you (who is very likely also giving some of that to the other people that are cleaning up after you), yes, you are an asshole. stay at home and cook for yourself.
my only answer to the people in your example is they should be trying to organize a union and stop letting employers take advantage of them. those who get the furthest in life understand that working smart is way more self serving than 'workin hard'.lol@servers working harder than manual labor.

Both a friend and myself quit our jobs within the past few days, and I was looking into something completely unrelated. Our managers immature children(read: middle-aged men and women) and decided to make it significantly uglier than it had to be(Facebook rants to all of our fellow coworkers about how two-faced we are.
As for my actual question, is anyone actually capable of citing a real source for the law I quoted? I tried for a while and came up with nothing.
Edit: And this is my fourth restaurant job; Its not just a matter of being ignorant to how things work. I've never worked in such an unprofessional setting.
