Well, the idea was that if the manifold cracked again later, I could just replace that instead of having to replace the catalytic converter. There is also rust on the bottom of the exhaust pipe on the under carriage, so it's just a matter of time until that goes. In the long run it would probably save a few bucks and comes with the added bonus of a small performance boost (although honestly this isn't really a concern of mine.)

A new EX smanifold is only around $100. I also found a catback exhaust system that would fit for around $130. The only problem is I can't find a downpipe for cheaper than $300. I did find a replacement manifold/converter for $250 though, so I'll probably just go with that.

A muffler shop should easily be able to make you a downpipe section with a flex pipe before the cat section.
