I think a few people will disagree with you there. As for getting to the fun part... RPGs usually are slow starters, anyone remember SO2's intro? Longest fucking intro ever.

I think I may agree that the battles have been a fairly weak part of FF games. Now, the system for advancement has been pretty neat each and every game, but what you did in each battle was fairly lackluster. I look forward to FFXIII's.

The thing is, when people think of battles in FF games, their mind kinda wanders to two places, random encounters with trash, and epic boss battles (of course, that's basically all there is). I tend to remember epic boss battles more than trash encounters, I guess if I want to see the battles in a positive light, but if I wanted to look down on it, I would look on random encounters which are frustrating, slow and repetitive.

I personally had tons of fun fighting Ultimecia, Seymour, Dark Aeons/Penence, Emerald Weapon (before I learned hax), hunts in FFXII, Kuja, etc. There are lots of boss battles that really make use of your character's abilities and the system you're playing with and for me, I found all of XII's system enjoyable (I might regret saying that, at least the topic might) and I found battles in X very fun.

Also, X-2. That had a fantastic battle system, but people tend to gloss over that.

    lol.

"You think this game is bad because you are a WRPG-guy!" Do people really think like this? Goddamn.

Really? Because when I actually see the game in play nothing looks different. Perhaps these reviews speak of some hidden element.

Doesn't change the fact that most of the time in FF games I spam attack and then heal/cure ailments and repeat.

That's not to say there aren't good times, I loved FFXII, probably about as much as this forums collective dislike of the game and I had lots of fun in that game, I recall the bomb fight in particular being fun and interesting (especially if you didn't use a zodiac spear and weren't overleveled). I think the non-random encounters really made the game different from previous FF's, since you could then run around and kite as a strategy, it's a whole new element to a battle.

That's not really going to change in FFXIII either. In the end-game parts you'll need to buff and debuff but 99% of the time you'll just be going all out attack.

Isn't that to do with how you play the game, rather than how the game needs to be played?

GamesRadar has a review up already, and basically is what i thought about the linearity of the game (being stuck in a moon isnt quite the open area that everyone wants it to be)..

And honestly, about having no towns like everyone preaches (sp) i couldnt care less, ever since at least FF8 SE introduced shops via menu (supTonberry)

    So where are the towns?!

It's not so much that FFXIII doesn't have towns, but rather it doesn't have the usual JRPG structure of town-dungeon-town-dungeon-boss repeat. Oh, there are towns in FFXIII, the beautiful beach town of Bodhum and the abandoned, overgrown Oerba for example, but they're not RPG towns as such.

Well, we'll see. There are ways around this. Not having a 9999 damage cap for one. Making some more interesting magic spells that hit for more damage so you'll have more spells being thrown (granted good players do this anyway) or making some form of combo move. I think it'd be interesting to throw a skillchain concept into a console FF game.

FFXIII does have quite a bit of difference between magic attacks and physical ones. Physical attacks do the most damage, but they barely increase the break gauge. Magic attacks do less damage, but greatly increase the break gauge.

The break gauge also resets faster if you're using only magic attacks. Physical attacks make the it reset much slower.

I just have a couple questions to people that have played it, are the battles challenging, and does the battle system get stale after a while (obviously I know the first 10 hours or w/e are pretty boring but still, difference between then and afterwards)?

I'd say it's the opposite. It's very boring early on and gets better and tougher later.

Havn't really read much of this thread or any reviews cause I want to go into the game fresh, but I'm also hoping for lots of challenging fights.
I loved the Hunts in FF12. Didn't like too much else of it though. ended up replaying it again just for the hunts. I glanced over a part of in this thread that mentioned Hunts were back in 13? or did I miread?

Yes the hunts are back. Although I'd say there's not enough of them.

Fixed, and get some Genji Gloves

I didn't find the battle system that dull, switching optimas/paradigms is 100% about planning ahead (which DOES get tedious when you switch group members outside of battle), and watching things come together is pretty enjoyable.

It's actually tedious to the point that I pretty much never switch out members the whole game...

Do party members gain exp(or whatever the equivalent is) while not in the party?

I'm just going off the IGN review... haven't played it yet.

It's cool if some people like the battles in the past FF's, I replay 7 through the most recent one every 2 years or so (or before a new one comes out), so they are fresh on my mind. And for the most part, they are pretty boring and dull.
