Should I stay in the "big field" in chapter 11 and just grind grind grind grind grind grind or do I get to go back there later? I'm finding the mobs in this chapter real hard so the answer might be self explanatory, but figured I'd ask.

Did you just complain about a JRPG being a JRPG?
If FF 6, 7, 8, 9 are JRPGs. And FF 10, 12, 13 are JRPGs, then I assume it is safe to say that you can't simply classify an rpg as a JRPG and have it generalize everything in that category. I am not complaining about the fact that this is a RPG from Japan, I'm complaining about the fact that it is shit compared to most older FF games. The older games were no where near as "Japan-y" or "anime-ish", whatever you want to call it, as this game is.
well I'm pretty far into this tunnel place now, should I head back?
If anything I feel it's the exact opposite. At least every character is human (as far as I know) I'm not sure if you're talking about visually or personality wise. The only "Japan-y" thing as you say it is the kid with the blue hair but that's about it.
So big heroes who can basically take on the whole world, save it, have ridiculous weapons, summon badass beasts to help you along the way, use magical powers of some sort, etc.. isn't anime-ish? If that's the new standard for 'anime-ish', then my god have the times changed. I mean we may as well name Zidane the "Goku" of sorts of the Final Fantasy world, what with the tail, and a SSJ-ish transformation, right?
Shit's the same, just prettier and more cutsceney. Nothing got more 'japany' or 'anime-ish'. Also, the definition of JRPG is linear-ness, repetative in a sense, over the top characters, ridiculous names and looks, fucked up bosses, and so on.
Not gona continue on the discussion though. If you've got issues with the game, fine.. everyone does I'm sure, but don't say it's too 'anime-ish' or 'japan-y'.
I'm not picking a fight because you didn't like the game, but nostalgia is fucking with you here if these are the adjectives you're using. That earlier FFs did not have voice acting and 1080p cutscenes may have masked the fact that they were equally loaded with common anime tropes as 13 is, if not more so. By leaving more up to your imagination you were free to say they weren't as 'anime-ish' or whatever the fuck. The older games were no where near as "Japan-y" or "anime-ish", whatever you want to call it, as this game is.
Yes, earlier FFs had better stories, better characters, etc. But they were just as plagued with stereotypes as this generation is.
Edit: NVM found it.

The battle system isn't even entirely developed/unlocked/etc. until towards the end of Chapter 3. Shit needs to be simple until you actually have control over what your characters can even do in battle.
Your "score" determines your spoils. I think it also applies to how much TP is recovered and how much CP you earn.
Storyline progression unlocks higher tiers in each role as well as new roles for characters to spend your CP in. You'll also be able to upgrade their capabilities in a Role by spending CP.
I usually hate the squeaky bubbly voices, but Vanille is peculiar enough to not bug me, I don't understand people despising her any more than, say, Rikku or other comparable characters. I'll agree on Hope.
What the fuck games are you playing that are better? Square-Enix hires some of the better voice talent for their games, and I must say they deliver, even cheesy lines, with some sort of realism. Go play White Knight Chronicles through and tell me this shit is bad/cheesy/etc.
Hope does suck, but some of the names are mostly aliases. Lightning isn't her real name. Also, who fucking cares?
I'm really wondering how you can play XII recently and not appreciate the absence of Vaan or Penelo's uselessness. Heavy Rain as a storyline comparison is apples and oranges. This is a fantasy.

Meh to all those bitching about the game. Fucking seriously? God forbid SE try something new with each FF that comes out. Seriously, stop expecting a FF7/8/whatever the fuck out of EVERY NEW FF. Shit gets old. If you don't like it, stop playing it. No one's putting a gun to your head. Get your head out of your ass and quit being so critical.
EDIT: You also have to think SE has to appeal to a new generation of gamers, not just those who've been playing since 1.
Spoiler: show
also, about launch. You don't know damage until you get the stagger up to 600%. Lightning was hitting one of the behemoths for 40k a pop at my current level. Bring it. gonna take the levels and weapons I've gained and give that boss a shot again tomorrow.
