    BG medical research

I've tried my University library and unless I'm looking on veterinary medicine or willing to drive 90 minutes (to the nearest med school library) I'm out of luck. I'm looking for a book, peer reviewed article or even a credible university posting symptoms (both common and uncommon) would be reliable for the following:

    -Malaria
    -West Nile
    -Typhoid
    -Strychnine poisoning
    -Alcohol poisoning (and withdrawl)

I can't seem to find credible sources for these illnesses using the internet, so I'm throwing this to BG for some help. I know there are a few doctors and pre-med students here, that may know of some websites that do have strong credibility when it comes to this subject. So if you know of any credible sources for this type of information, please let me know.

Anything that has the word wiki in it is usually not something you want to cite archi.

Do people really still not understand how to use wiki?

Protip: Wiki cites sources. Even if wiki isn't usable, the sources almost always are.

Well I can tell you right off the top of my head that Salmonella enterica serotype Typhi causes Typhoid fever. Like most things you get fever, malaise, weakness, but with Typhoid in particular you get a rosey rash on your chest. Humans are the only ones who can contract this particular disease. If you survive, you are pretty much a carrier forever as your body can't get rid of it (bacteria sticks around). It's a pretty nasty thing to get.

As far as where to find clinical information the best place to check is always the British Medical Journal or the Journal of Infectious Diseases.

edit: Also what Tyche said. CDC is *always* a prime source.

Here is where scientists go to find peer reviewed articles, though I think this may be on a bit higher level than what you are looking for:

    http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/

Even the more advanced papers however will usually have an introduction that will cover what you're looking for and give the original sources for that. Most likely, the CDC site will have what you're looking for and they are a credible source to site even if it's from their website.

    Also a word on wiki:

Friend of mine is an Anthropology professor and gave her students a take home test then wondered why they all got the same question wrong and it was wrong in exactly the same way. Turns out they all got their answers from a wiki page that was deliberately edited by some wacko. They all failed the question and the person who plagiarized the wiki was put on academic probation. Wiki should never be used for academic purposes save to give you a general idea where to go and what you're looking for.

I usually use Web of Science for journal articles like this, but you should definitely check around your University's website. Most sites will have a link to all the databases your university subscribes too which will make finding articles a lot easier.

Thanks alot Tyche, that is exactly what I was looking for. I didn't think to look on the CDC website.

And again with wikipedia, when I'm doing an important paper I steer clear of wikipedia like it has the plague. It does have some good information to a broad topic, but some of the sources for specifics that are cited there are sometimes a little shady.
