also, electric guitars are NOT easier to start with, because there is a LOT more that goes into knowing the best way to manage/maintain an electric AND an amp. there's so much that affects the tone of your guitar that you have to constantly be learning about gear AND technique, and because of it, a lot of people dont focus on practice and get caught up in the gear grind.

I actually learned on an electric without an amp. It's just easier that way unless your fingers are already calloused.

all of my practice/songwriting is done unplugged. ill find a riff i like and play with the 3rd, 5th and 7th of the scale until i find figure out what my intervals look like, then get the rhythm of it down. i know all 6 of my amp settings very intimately, so i can pick up a guitar somewhere, write down the notes/time signature, and know exactly what i'm going to do with it by the time i get home.

in short, unplugged electric is the way2go

I wanted to buy this guitar off craigslist for 120 bucks:

The guy says its a epiphone guitar worth 500 dollars but doesn't know what model it is and doesn't say on the guitar what kind it is. Kinda looks like a firebird, but I'm afraid it might be a knockoff. Think I should get it? Comes with a DL20 amp and stand.

You're probably safe, because even if it WAS a knock-off, 120 is still a good price for a guitar, amp and stand. If it's not a knock-off, even better for you. Just make sure it seems to be in proper working order.

I looked it up in the middle of this post, it doesn't look like a Firebird to me, it looks like something else or a fake.

The left side of the neck in his picture slopes off, in the real picture it's almost flat. I checked a few other Firebirds to see if it was possible a small change in model or something, but didn't find any difference. Not to say that there couldn't be one I didn't see.

TL;DR: 120 is decent for almost any guitar/amp/stand. I don't believe that guitar there is a real Epi Firebird. Good luck!

Edit: Upon further inspection, it could be that the guitar is leaning back and the picture kinda sucks, but my opinion stands. :D

If it's in very good condition, I don't think $100 is too much. If nothing else go into double digits, but not by much. That's why things cost $99 at stores and not $100. So ask $99 or $95, play the little mental game, and list it somewhere people will see it. :D

since this thread is bumped, i'm going to (more or less for no reason) state that my favorite cheap acoustics are alvarez, and for cheap electrics epiphones can't be beat (every so often i consider picking up an epiphone sg, but i don't even play my fender american standard telecaster enough, nor any of my acoustics, so i don't need another guitar).

Electric/acoustic: practice on what you actually want to play. Motivation is far more important than what's "easier". Don't get a terrible cheap guitar. You can always resell it later.

it's been awhile since i've played one, but i remember it usually being a little higher than you get on those flat ovations that feel almost like playing an electric, but lower than most (especially cheap) acoustics. i always liked how playable they (the like $100~$200 alvarez's i'd play in stores) were and how they seemed to strike a nice balance between bass and treble (i have a big, mildly expensive takamine that is kind of all bass and a middling ovation that's a bit tinny... i'm not very satisfied with either, but if i got yet another acoustic it would be when i have enough money to graduate to a good martin).
