Personally, I'd wait out a new 120 before I'd buy a used 40. Those old machines seem to have a higher fail rate, and buying used generally means no warranty from Sony.
I'm not too worried, I'll be buying the Gamestop warranty. Normally I avoid those things, but for systems they tend to be worth it. I know I've gotten like two or three free DS's simply because a couple of pixels stopped working, they didn't even bother to check either. I could have totally lied and just gotten new ones.
And yeah, I'm going for the 40GB because it's cheap and because it's the only one I can find. I could order one online and get whatever I wanted, but then I'd have to wait, and if it wasn't working right I'd have to deal with all that shit. And I certainly wouldn't have it in time for Final Fantasy XIII!
I'm not too worried about the fail rate, it's not like I'm buying a used 360![]()
You'll probably be fine, even the first generation PS3s have less than a 1% fail rate, and that's mainly due to overheating. Just make sure it's in a well vented area and you'll be fine.
Jeez, what's with the hatorade?
I've had a 360 since launch, and I've never gotten a RROD. The only reason people get them, is because they're idiots and set the console on it's side... which has vents, so it overheats the system. I'm sure if you put a PS3/ any console on its vents it would die pretty quickly.
Anyway (OP), generally speaking you should be safe using a 40 gb if you're only using it for FFXIV. If you think long down the road, like expansion packs and whatnot, 40 gb should be okay. Even if it ends up not being enough, you can always copy your data to another HD.

this was the article that made me rethink my idea of buying a 360. although FFXIV sealed the deal. the data itself says that 360s fail at an abnormally high rate.
I'm not saying no one should own a 360, just saying if you buy own, you're more likely than other console owners to end up having to deal with the hassle of returns and exchanges.
Does anyone know how to transfer save protected game saves? Ass creed II, MW2, and pretty much every game coming out will not allow you to xfer save files, because some dipshit on ebay is selling game save files for 5 bucks for 100% completion, spoiling it for EVERYONE else.
This is why i havnt upgraded my PS3 yet.
Ethernet data transfer
I'd just go slim 250.. or upgrade the hdd. Ps3 offers both, cheap and easy. Just regular laptop drives. Easy to exchange.
I don't know, that guy sounds so incredibly biased. I'm not going to start a console war though, because honestly I don't want to fight about it... and I don't particularly care for any of the next-gen consoles respectively. Every system has it's ups and downs, every person has different experiences, and I'm going to leave it at that. lol
I am wondering about people who wanna play FFXIV on the old Xbox360 20 gbs, though. I guess they'll just get a new HDD.
You can back up to a (FAT32) drive via usb. There's a back up tool on the system for that. Here's a pretty good walk through. It's a couple years old, but at a quick glance I don't see any reason why it wouldn't still work.
edit: oops, here's the link [Gamespot link removed]
It won't restore your locked saves if it's a different PS3 than the one you backed up the data on. The only way to transfer the locked saves is either back up to the same PS3, or use Ethernet Data Transfer, which requires you to have both PS3's.
I skipped a few replies, but I thought the max storage you could have for the PS3 was 250GB. To those of you with bigger drives, can you utilize all of the space? Just curious, as I am thinking of upgrading too. Hope I don't lose any of my game saves though.
