Started last night and lost track of time.. before i realized it i needed to head to bed.

The dialog in this is great. I just got to the part with the anti grav beam thing, so far the new stuff like the goos and the light bridge are very nice.

So I preordered Portal 2, which came with a copy of Portal for 'free' but stupid me I didn't write down the activation code, and seeing as I already had a Portal license Steam doesn't seem to be keeping a record of the 'free' license key anywhere. Is there some way I can retrieve that?

If you already had portal registered with your Steam account, then the additional copy should have been sent over to your gift manager. Look under the Tools menu, I think. You shouldn't need an activation code.

afaik, you can't gift copies of portal 1. so, if you already own portal 1, you don't get any free copies. I bought the orange box the other day (i'm pretty sure i was the only steam user who didn't have it) and already had portal 1 and didn't get any giftable copy. Maybe this is only with the orange box though.

I actually got Portal 2 gifted to me by someone who competed in the gold potato thing. Awesome stuff.

A bit off topic but since there's been some minor orange box chatter here: I haven't even touched Half Life, Half Life 2 or any of the episodes/Lost Coast, is it worth playing through all those games? Can I skip HL1 and just go for HL2?

I skipped HL1 and still enjoyed HL2. But you might want to just read a quick synopsis of the HL1 story so you can get the basic idea of what's happened.

Alright, I'll probably do that, thanks. I hear so much chatter about HL2 and I remember how groundbreaking it was for its time and I feel like I'm committing a cardinal sin or something by not having played it.

So I just started playing Portal 2 today, and I noticed a few disappointing changes in the controls (as compared to Portal 1):

    1. You can't jump while crouching, or crouch while jumping.
    2. The crosshair thing behaves differently...In Portal 2, the blue or orange slivers light up if you've already shot that color portal. In portal one, they lit up only when you could shoot a portal (thus telling you WHERE you could shoot portals), and a colored oval indicated which portal you shot last. I would have preferred if they had kept the 'slivers light up if you can shoot a portal here' feature from portal 1, but it's not that big of a deal.
    3. You can't throw stuff anymore! Well you can, but you have to use 'E' instead of just pressing Mouse1. I dunno why they got rid of this...
    4. Portals now travel faster (instantly?) to where you shoot them, so no more 'Peek-a-portal'

Anyway, those are just the things I noticed right away. However, none of them are significant enough to really matter that much. I still love this game so far.

It's not that great. I'd honestly suggest you just give HL1 a try too though, 2 isn't better, so you might aswell play both.

That bugged me too. >.< Also, the amount of items you could actually pick up seemed to be much less. Not that it really has a huge impact on anything in the game, but I just liked throwing chairs and other random stuff through portals.

Hey guys just got the game. Friend wants me to jump into co-op with him first thing. If I play co-op first will it spoil any of the main game or will I be unfamiliar with the new mechanics of the gadgets and stuff?

You can gift extra copies of Portal (along with half-life ep1/2 from the orange box).

Co-op starts where the single player ends. I haven't started co-op yet so I can't say how many spoilers there really are.

Pretty sure co-op takes place before the original portal. That was my interpretation of it, anyway.
