Well, looks like I'm Portal 2less for the week. Both stores in my area were sold out of PS3/PC copies. Oddly enough the local Walmart had a full supply of it in for 360. ;/

Wanted it for my PS3 so I had something for split-screen gaming with when I had a buddy over, as games that support it are far and few between.

I would suggest just play HL2. I went back and completed HL1 thinking I would find out more about the story. It's not worth it unless youre die-hard. The game is called Half Life for a reason that's all you need to know. You will only live in that game for a few seconds before dying to new arbitary trap #493839 and having to re-load a saved game.

Theres only a little bit of story going on there. And no real characters to speak of except Gordan, the scientist who just looks like every other scientest, and then the G-man at the end. Black Mesa has some dimensional experiment go awry, shit goes bad, then you play the whole long game with nothing happening. At the end you go to the alien dimension and battle a thing for some reason. Then the G-man offers you a choice. That's all that is involved in HL1 right there.

so dont know if anyone noticed, but when you first enter the facility and theres a picture of the founder, he has a trophy for "potato science advancement" and i couldn't stop laughing.

im about half way through the single player and im enjoying every minute of it! seriously i love what they did for the story of this one, and the new robot had me laughing the entire time so far. i really cant wait to finish this and do some co-op. if anyone wants a co-op partner add my psn or PM me for my steam email

HL1 is a solid game in its own right, and possibly worth playing. What I would say though is that quite a lot of the praise heaped on HL1 has to do with what it did when it was released. Expectations have to be...adjusted. Same as you wouldn't expect, say, DOOM to be Halo, even though both are also highly influential games in the genre. If you're interested in the progression of the genre/etc, then definitely play through it. It doesn't really have a narrative worth playing the game for like, say, Deus Ex or System Shock 2 do though.

HL2 will still give you the flavor of the Half Life series, but expanded and polished. The episodes aren't very long, but HL2 + Ep1/Ep2 will be longer than most FPS games. You honestly won't miss much story-wise from not playing HL1.

Lost Coast is a tech demo for HDR (primarily), so no real need to play it.

I noticed this as well! Seriously every time I saw an item I tried to pick it up...and very few of them actually COULD be picked up. I think there's like 2 chairs in the game you can actually pick up.

Just finished the game. Even with the little things that were changed, I still really enjoyed the game as a whole. Can't wait to do co-op.

Finished SP today, had a lot of fun. Not many games can straight out make you laugh or chuckle out loud. Puzzles weren't too hard, expected some to be much harder than they were. Some I solved accidentally, one I think I cheated on.

Ending was a lot of fun, although quite easy, but still much more than entertaining enough to make up for that.

Doing co-op later or tomorrow, then maybe I'll wait a week or 2 and replay it.

Did anyone else notice an extremely strong 'portal funnel' effect? There was one time where I was trying to do an elaborate jump, and the portal funnel effect was REALLY screwing me over. As far as I know, it can't be turned off, either. Eventually I succeeded in the jump, but only after a bunch of tries.

    Contains ending spoilers.
    Spoiler: show
Never have I seen such a flabbergastingly awesome way of defeating a boss. There was a moment as I was aiming at the Moon that I thought to myself, "Am I really going to portal the Moon?" Shortly after pulling the trigger... *glint* Down goes Wheatley. What makes it even crazier was that as I questioned the possibility of making the moon shot, I remembered the grey gel and how it was made out of moon rocks. I think I'm going to have to watch the documentary of the final level to see who pitched that idea.

thanks for the advice on HL1/HL2, i was actually torn about this myself as well. I'll prolly just pick up the orange box then, and if i want to i'll go back and try HL1. My worry was that HL1 aged horribly, and it sounds like it may have.

    Ending spoilers:

    Spoiler: show
I loooooved the ending. I really want the ending track with the robot opera. That part was fucking amazing. The moon part had me going, "Oh god yes," and my cube came back. <3 GlaDOS was overall a really, really good character in my opinion.

Just noticed after playing through single player...where were those excursion funnel things? Is it only in co-op? Because I never got to place a portal under one and suck everything up.

I need to admit, HL1 didn't age fairly well. It's not too bad, and while it's not fair comparing the engine HL1 was on to Source, you can just feel how dated it is. Not sure if it's just for the addons (Blue Shift and possibly Opposing Force), but you can get killed in elevators due to a bug.

BTW Kwijiboe, we need to do more Co-Op, that was fun as hell since I didn't need to type everything out.

As for the Portal 2 ending...

    Spoiler: show
Aren't the moon events pretty much impossible? Since Chell wasn't in a space suit or anything wouldn't the vacuum of space kill her?

    @ the spoiler..

    Spoiler: show
Really? You're questioning logic in a game where the AI is out to kill you, then you save it, then another AI tries to kill you, then you use portals to walk through w..my head's exploding. Obviously a whoosh, lol. Carry on. I'm stupid.

Argh I'm certain I'm this close to beating the game but my brain is just fried

    Spoiler: show
Having to figure out which walls to 'paint' and which gel goes where in the room past the top of the elevator shaft is just beyond my brain at half past midnight, with work tomorrow morning

    Science concludes tomorrow, I guess.

On the 'which walls to paint' subject.. my theory? paint any wall that's possible and go from there. that's what we did in co-op. slanted platforms to allow painting? go for it! Haha.

Beat the game then let my roommate start the single player.... and oh my god this game is rage inducing when you are watching someone else play. Jesus christ I can't watch anyone else play this game I hope co-op isn't as rage inducing.

Regarding the last two spoiler posts

    Spoiler: show
Contrary to popular belief you don't die the second you end up in space, your head doesn't explode and your blood doesn't boil. Really the only problem with that scenario would be the risk of her lungs rupturing because of the sudden pressure change but we are dealing with a world that has freaking portals so who knows what kind of effect that would have on it.

It's not as long as you have someone who's competent and go with voice chat, along with using the timers/pointers.
