Moving from FL to NY, any advice?

As the title states.

This is going to be my first move away from home. I'll be living in probably a dumpy place for a bit, with not much to go on. In Elmhurst, Queens, NY.

Any advice on jobs that may be available in NY?

Any advice on things I'll need to buy?

Any advice in general about moving away from home?

I'm terrified and extremely excited all in one go.

EDIT: Mostly I'm afraid of the cold. Fuck cold-weather. ; ;

Or something along those lines. You're most likely not used to cold weather (as you mentionned) so you're likely to freeze your balls (if present) off at first...so don't forget NyQuil and/or DayQuil either :D

i live in queens!

my gf lives in jackson heights, which is right next to elmhurst. its a decent area, my biggest gripe is how crowded it is, and the lack of parking. there is plenty of public transportation though.

as far as jobs go, it really depends on your sector. white collar jobs are a 30min train ride away in manhattan, but finding a white collar type of job sucks atm. blue-ish collar jobs (bank teller, cashier, etc) are pretty widely available locally ($8-12/hr).

i could provide more precise details, but i wouldn't know where to start. i've lived in queens for 28 yrs now (whole life), so feel free to ask.

oh, and buy boots. timberlands ftw in the shitty ass snow. though we're probably just about done with the snow for this winter.

Since most clothes for the winter are on clearance right now, go stock up on long sleeve shirts that you can layer next winter, and find yourself a nice, warm coat or two. I bought a $100 hoodie for $17 last week off a clearance rack.

Just a small tip, cuz I know when I lived in the cold, bitter north for two years, I went up there without a winter coat or any long sleeve shirts, so I froze my ass off that first winter.

Most of my friends from High School are moving from NY to Florida lol.

The way of life up here is much more fast paced, especially when you get down near NYC. If you have a problem with that kind of thing you're going to be miserable. Everyone is always in a rush to get where they are going, me included lol. From relatives and friends that come up from Florida to visit, the fast paced atmosphere is easily the hardest for them to adjust too.

NYC is really either a love it or hate it city. You'll know in short order which is it.

I hope you have a well paying job because like other people have already said, rent up here blows nuts. If you don't pay on time your landlord WILL throw you out on your ass quickly. They can get someone else who pays rent on time without much effort, housing is always in demand.

Yes, shit moves fast but that shouldn't be an issue. Just move at the same pace as everyone else and don't stop in the middle of the sidewalk to gawk at the skyscrapers like a stupid tourist and you'll be fine.

Dunno if you're planning to buy a car, but my advice is: don't. Insurance prices and the cost of parking in the city is ridiculous. Public transportation is great, learn to use it, buy a metrocard and you'll be set.

Yeah, the weather sucks in the winter, it can get pretty cold. The advantage is the whole state doesn't shut down when there's an inch of snow like pussy ass southern states. Get a nice coat with a hood and a good pair of snow boots and gloves and you'll be fine. The summer is better in NY too because it doesn't get to be 100 degrees like it does in Florida

Like everyone has stated already, unless you have a job waiting for you there, don't do it. The cost of living is so ridiculously high, it's really not worth it. I personally miss it since i've moved from there to down south. Where i live now, everyone is nice and polite and it fucking irritates me. My bills are cut in half though, so i'll take it.

Oh, i have to pump my own gas now! What madness is this?

Honestly though, you should be more specific with what you need info on. NYC isn't really a bad place to live if you're young and starting up your career because you'll have access to a lot of networks if you do some research.

However if you're just coming here because you threw a dart at a big U.S map, then if you're not properly prepared, you'll be moving back to FL sooner than later with a shitty experience of something you weren't ready for.

I am not moving into an expensive place. The rent is the same I pay now, actually, with the exact same number of houseguests.

The only difference is it's not my family.

I know it's pretty out-there to do this, I just want to see if I can. I am not looking for an amazing job, just something to pay the bills.

I WANT the feeling of living on the grudges of life, bill by bill basically. I've never had that before. I've always been decent with money saving as I don't buy much except for food.

If there's a money-spending vice that I have, it's food. I love to eat and I love to eat out.

To be quite honest, I expect to live there for a year, maybe 2, before moving back down and settling into FL again.

Thanks the replies so far, I'm glad this topic didn't turn into a shitstorm.

I am coming April so I was expecting the weather to be a little bit warmer... And that'd give me an ease into this coming up winter so I know what to expect. I'll definitely look into a winter jacket on sale because I definitely don't have one yet. And leg warmers, I want some of those.

Edit: I am not looking to get a car. I will be researching public transportation and relying on that. Tp Cephius: I've already done the gawk-at-everything tourist trip, so I should be fine.
