Moving from FL to NY, any advice?

I am not moving into an expensive place. The rent is the same I pay now, actually, with the exact same number of houseguests.

The only difference is it's not my family.

I know it's pretty out-there to do this, I just want to see if I can. I am not looking for an amazing job, just something to pay the bills.

I WANT the feeling of living on the grudges of life, bill by bill basically. I've never had that before. I've always been decent with money saving as I don't buy much except for food.

If there's a money-spending vice that I have, it's food. I love to eat and I love to eat out.

To be quite honest, I expect to live there for a year, maybe 2, before moving back down and settling into FL again.

I am coming April so I was expecting the weather to be a little bit warmer... And that'd give me an ease into this coming up winter so I know what to expect. I'll definitely look into a winter jacket on sale because I definitely don't have one yet. And leg warmers, I want some of those.

Edit: I am not looking to get a car. I will be researching public transportation and relying on that. Tp Cephius: I've already done the gawk-at-everything tourist trip, so I should be fine.

Honestly though, if you're looking for a "go it alone" place, NYC is great for that. People around here are pretty independent and you'll find things are catered to that type of person. Just don't expect anyone to go out of their way to help you (except the police, most are actually pretty nice if you're not interrupting them).

The food in NY is awesome.. you'll love it. Get dim sum in Chinatown, it's great. Lot of Greek places in Astoria, Italian pretty much anywhere... etc.

As for shopping, come out to NJ where everything is cheaper

This is my only concern. I mean like: Are groceries going to be more expensive? Eggs, Bacon, Milk, etc. I'll be living off basics and not eating out much.

My only expenses that I foresee at the moment are:

Rent (utilities and internet are included in this)
Cell phone bill
Metro Card
Shopping for groceries
Some bathroom necessities
Some sheets

He's not joking, everything is more expensive in NY. There's a high-as-hell sales tax, and the logistics of getting goods into an area as crowded as NYC demands that the consumer price is higher than it would be in suburban/rural areas. Be prepared to pay a lot more than you're used to.

That's what I loved about NY -- The independancy. (Made up word, I know) When I was younger, I always saw myself in that kind of lifestyle. Fast paced, own place. I can't really get that down here.

I won't have my "own" place, but I'll have my own room. I think the reason it's so cheap is because it's going to be a small bedroom shared with a house of 4. Not exactly what you'd call convenient, but hey, I all ready share with 3 others at the moment, and 1 more when she's not off living in TN.

I love New York, do not take what I am saying as a "dont come" its just that this is stuff you need to be ready for. Overall most jobs pay more here as well. Its still not the money needed to live in a area like this ~_~

If you can put up with a lot New York ROCKS. Its the best place in the world if you ask me. I live right outside the city, 30min train ride into it from Long Island. Go to the city at least twice a week lol

This I've already known about. Sucks, but I've lived in VA before, too, and they have State tax. Not sure about county, but definitely state.

Queens Center Mall is in Elmhurst and has a lot of stores. There are also a bunch of Chinese supermarkets. For Metrocards, you can get it at any subway station or delis/pharmacies with the Metrocard sticker outside.

http://www.mta.info/ will probably be your best friend for a little while. You're also going to need to figure out the neighborhoods and such or else you'll probably get lost quick.

Not that that's a bad thing...Taking a ride into the city and just wandering around is a pretty good way to figure it out.

For starters: The nightlife is awesome and there are bars everywhere. It's expensive, but as a chick I'm sure you won't have a problem. Pick a scene, I'm sure a whole bunch of us here could tell you where to go.
The food is awesome. Everywhere. If you want any advice feel free to ask, I know a few places and a few of my friends are closet foodies.
Stay away from Canal Street and Times Square unless you have a specific reason to be there, because the tourists are a pain in the fucking ass. Fucking hate walking down Canal Street in the middle of the day.
You'll find shopping everywhere...unless you're just looking for groceries. Thankfully, you're in Queens so it shouldn't be an issue. There are pharmacies all over the place for everything else.

Not sure what your educational and work background is, but finding a job here is pretty rough nowadays. A while back Verizon had an open interview thing for around 50 openings, and tons of people showed up(can't remember the exact number, can prolly dig up the article in abit). So if you already aren't, start lining up interviews around a month before you get here if possible depending on what your credentials are.

Food wise NYC rocks, not gonna lie. There are several Asian Markets, Spanish Markets, Italian markets, hell most supermarkets here don't even have ethnic food aisles like in other states, stuff gets thrown in with the regular food in some places cause it's the norm depending on your neighborhood. The city itself is a giant melting pot of cultures so you can find a grocery store or restaurant/diner/cafe for almost every culture here. Price wise it shouldn't be too bad, depends on where you go but if you're not used to paying sales tax then it will definitely be higher. I don't spend a lot on food cause aside from pizza I end up making my own(considering a pizza stone but eh). Speaking of pizza, go to some of the official pizza joints while you're here. Mandatory.

And yea learn to use the MTA, while the delays and route changes can suck it's overall one of the better forms of transportation in this city. Great website is http://hopstop.com/ You can just put in the address of where you are and where you want to go, and it'll give you bus/train/walking directions on how to get there. Very useful if you're new here, hell I've lived here all my life and I still use it on occasion for convenience. I personally prefer the train over the bus if I can avoid it, but that's just a Brooklyn thing cause buses tend to be popular places for nigger moments.

Nah not just a Brooklyn thing. Being a Bronx native and currently staying in Manhattan during the week, the bus still sucks especially around rush hour (common sense I guess). Let's not even talk about buses out in Queens.
